Topic: Metacity

In the News (Fri 24 May 13)

Metacity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The development of Metacity was started by Havoc Pennington and it is released under the GNU General Public License.
Although Metacity is part of the GNOME project and designed to integrate into the GNOME desktop, it does not require GNOME to run, and GNOME can be used with different window managers provided that they support the part of the ICCCM specification that GNOME requires.
Metacity, unlike the previous choices for GNOME window manager, has few configuration options and its introduction as the default choice was a controversial one.

 Metacity patches: window-placement options: random,cascade,center
This patch for Metacity adds a few window-placement options that can be configured in the graphical gconf-editor or with the gconftool-2 command-line program.
This skips Metacity's center/tile behavior and cascades new windows the upper-left corner of the current desktop.
In my copious free time, I plan to fix the cascade mode so that the windows don't overlap as much and so that they start cascading from a position away from the upper-left corner (so desktop icons are not immediately covered by windows).

 [No title]
The Metacity developers have worked hard to minimize the complexity of their window manager, but in doing so, they have severely limited its usefulness and inflicted tremendous frustration on an increasingly dissatisfied group of marginalized power users.
Metacity is significantly less useful than just about every other mainstream window manager in existence, and the developers are highly resistant to adding features that will only be used by a small portion of the user population.
Several Metacity advocates commented that additional utilities like Brightside and Devil's Pie expand the functionality of Metacity, but even with those additional utilities, using Metacity severely compromises my efficiency, and there are more than a few other Sawfish curmudgeons that feel the same way.

 Window Managers for X: Metacity
Metacity is a lightweight window manager written by Havoc Pennington from Red Hat.
In fact the intention is to remove the traditional separation between window manager and desktop, and present to the user a single desktop interface.
This means that the limited configuration options available for Metacity are shown as desktop options, not as Metacity options (although there is an optional "Metacity-setup" panel which conflicts with this approach).

[Users] Sawfish vs. Metacity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Metacity has two major objective advantages over sawfish: it's more actively maintained, and it has a much better upgrade path.
For the sake of contrast, metacity is rather actively maintained.
Then there are more subjective reasons to use metacity better GNOME 2 support and simplicity.

AIGLX, metacity, nvidia and Xgl   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
During the first couple of months when I was experimenting with GL compositing on Xgl I had similar plans but after a few months I realized that starting from scratch and trying to reuse as much code as possible was the best idea.
I'll continue to reuse metacity code in compiz as plugins and I'll have a look at libcm asap and consider the possibility of integrating it with compiz somehow.
There seems to be a lot of people confused about this, so to clarify things, I also like to respond to this paragraph from the fedora aiglx page: "We've been working on the AIGLX code for a some time with the community, which is in direct contrast with the way that XGL was developed.

Slashdot | Sun Drops Sawfish for Metacity
Metacity and Sawfish are two window managers for the GNOME desktop, and Sun has decided to use Metacity over Sawfish for GNOME 2.
Choosing Metacity may be the right thing for Sun to do anyway, but the departure of even the main developer of Sawfish would not be sufficient reason.
Metacity gives GNOME a chance to address one of its manageability flaws, the confilct between a desktop environment and the window manager.

The story, apparently, is that the sawfish project went moribund, so the GNOME guys switched to metacity.
The problem with making these things "intuitive" for "ordinary users" is that those of us used to the old way of doing things get left high and dry.
For reference of any who google their way here, here is the (almost) complete documentation of functions metacity makes available for key binding.

Replace metacity by xfwm4 - Ubuntu Forums
Since metacity became the default window manager for gnome, I've always been bugged by the absence of some very useful features such as edge resistance towards other windows and vertical/horizontal maximization.
The latter is actually somewhat implemented, but in a poor way, and appearently, the developers of metacity don't seem to see a desperate need for properly implementing the above features anytime soon.
Fortunately, there are alternatives to using metacity as window manager under Gnome.

GNOME 2.2.0 Release Notes - Metacity Window Manager
GNOME 2.2 officially incorporates the Metacity window manager, a fully integrated window manager that uses GTK+ for UI elements, communicates tightly with the panel and other desktop elements, and is configured straight from the GNOME preferences dialogs.
At the same time, all interaction between the window manager and the desktop is done via documented standards (see the section called "Standards Compliance"), so you can substitute the window manager of your choice from a long list of available options: Sawfish, fvwm2, icewm, Waimea, Openbox, are just some of them.
Early versions of Metacity were in wide use a month or two after GNOME 2.0, so many people will already be familiar with its basic features:

plope - Adding Metacity Key Bindings in Fedora
I'm futzing around with a Fedora test release (Fedora is the new name for non-enterprise Red Hat Linux).
Older versions of Gnome, at least in older Red Hat releases, used a different window manager that allowed you to assign arbitrary keybindings via the UI.
The Fedora release, which uses Metacity as a window manager, doesn't.

Just installed RedHat 8.0, and discovered they've changed the window manager from sawfish to metacity, and don't even ship enlightenment anymore.
In metacity 2.8.1 (shipped with RH FC2) there is a bug: when ~/.metacity folder is removed, the desktop will not load because a session is referenced in ~/.gnome2/sessions that does not (at that point) exist - so metacity will die and desktop will stop loading (needs C-A-BS).
This can be fixed by renaming the ~/.gnome2/sessions file to something else and trying again.
