	Massasoit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		During this politically promising time, Massasoit had five children: "Moanam," or Wamsutta, also known as "Alexander," who was born sometime between 1621 and 1624; Pometecomet, Metacomet, or Metacom, also known as "Philip"; a third son, Sonkanuchoo; and two daughters, one whose name the English failed to record, and Amie.
		Metacom, Massasoit's second son became sachem of the Pokanoket, and chief sachem of the Greater Wampanoag Confederacy.
		Metacom, also known as "Philip," certainly believed that Wamsutta had been treacherously murdered at the hands of the English.

		Curiously enough, the anniversary of the declaration of Metacom’s War has become a patriotic holiday in Boston under the Second Republic, since the hundredth anniversary of this declaration was celebrated by the rebels of 1775 by an attack on the hill of Mishawum which inflicted severe losses on the army of the Massachusetts Bay authorities.

		Led by Metacom, the Pokunoket chief called "King Philip" by the English, the bands known today as Wampanoag Indians joined with the Nipmucks, Pocumtucks, and Narragansetts in a bloody uprising.
		They had become increasingly dependent on English goods, food, and weapons, and their bargaining power diminished as the fur trade dried up, tribal lands were sold, and Metacom and other leaders were forced by the colonists to recognize English sovereignty.
		Philip (Indian name, Metacom or Metacomet) was the son of Massasoit (Ousamequin) and brother of Alexander (Wamsutta) whom Philip succeeded as sachem in the summer of 1662.

	Metacom Relates Indian Complaints about the English Settlers, 1675
		Metacom or King Philip, leader of the Wampanoags near Plymouth colony, led many other Indians into a widespread revolt against the colonists of southern New England in 1675.
		Easton recorded Philip’s complaints, including the steady loss of Wampanoag land to the Europeans; the English colonists’ growing herds of cattle and their destruction of Indian crops; and the unequal justice Indians received in the English courts.
		This meeting between Easton and Metacom proved futile, however, and the war (which became the bloodiest in U.S. history relative to the size of the population) began late that month.
