  Radiance metafile program
The metafile graphics format was designed with the primary goal of serving as a temporary file for routines which output to dot-matrix and other line-at-a-time devices.
The metafile commands are as follows: F end of file: no arguments.
The standard location for metafiles used by the programs is /usr/lib/meta/, but can be changed by setting the environment variable MDIR.

Because metafiles take up less space and are more device-independent than bitmaps, they provide convenient storage for images that appear repeatedly in an application or need to be moved from one application to another.
In some cases, there are two variants of a metafile record, one representing the record created by Windows versions before 3.0 and the second representing the record created by Windows versions 3.0 and later.
Metafile Header The metafile header contains a description of the size of the metafile and the number of drawing objects it uses.

Unfortunately few Windows applications that support metafiles, also support metafiles that contain OpenGL (you also have to consider that this support is only in NT 4.0 or later, and isn’t even planned for Windows 98).
Since enhanced metafiles are supported natively by the clipboard, this would be an ideal way to cut and paste OpenGL images from one application to another.
The metafiles Pixelformat is used to select a close matching one for the window, and an OpenGL rendering context is created.

Typically, a metafile is made up of commands to draw objects such as lines, polygons and text and commands to control the style of these objects.
But as soon as the user tries to edit (or ungroup) the metafile, then they convert it to their own internal format and that's where the idiosyncracies occur.
Metafile Companion from Companion Software is about as close as you come to a "perfect" metafile editor.

 Overview
Metafile is a code specifically written in order to exploit a critical vulnerability on Windows 2003/XP/2000 computers in the library GDI32.DLL, which is used by the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, Internet Explorer and Outlook, among other programs.
The vulnerability can be exploited by creating a specially crafted WMF (Windows MetaFile) image and then distributing it using any means: for example, hosting it in a web page and enticing users into accessing it.
There are evidences that point to this code being used in a malicious web page to download and run a copy of a spyware program.

For example, the time of metafile generation may be included (if the time is included, it shall be in the format of the substring "Time: hhmm", where hhmm is the time on the 24-hour clock - time is the only optional item for which the format is standardized by PIP).
In some metafile elements, a parameter may be "unused" as a consequence of the value of an earlier parameter, however the parameter shall still be present.

If the metafile data grows too large to be stored in memory, or needs to be saved before an application terminates, the data can be written to disk in the form of a WMF or EMF file and played back from disk.
When the metafile data is rendered (or played back, in Microsoft terminology), the data from each record is used to perform the appropriate GDI function call to render each object stored in the file.
Clipboard metafiles are also based on the standard metafile format, but are preceded by an additional 8- or 16-byte header that allows the position of the metafile on the Clipboard viewer.

Microsoft Windows Metafile (WMF) files are used to store vector and bitmap-format image data in memory or in disk files for later playback to an output device.
When the metafile data is rendered (or played back, in Microsoft terminology), the data from each record is used to perform the appropriate function call to render each object in the image.
The last record in every metafile always has a function number of zero and is used to indicate the end of the record data.

Metafiles are one of two fundamental ways of representing an image.
Metafiles have both advantages and disadvantages with respect to bitmaps.
This "size" is not relevant to anything in the physical world, as the image can still be displayed at any desired size, but a metafile's size can be assigned to define its intended display size or to relate the arbitrary units in the metafile to real world units (for example, in an engineering drawing).
