 MetaFilter - Uncyclopedia
MetaFilter is a useless area of compost blog that provides users a public forum to boast about how long it's been since they have owned a automobile.
Metafilter was founded in 995 by Quonsar the Dipshiterous, and to this day he rules over Metafilter with his winky stink and a large jar of Miracle Whip.
Metafilter has now progressed into a forum which allows new members who don't belong to the uber-intellectual anarchy to join in at any time via eBay where they auction off 5 memberships on the 3rd day of every month.

New Jack Librarian: Asking Metafilter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Ask Metafilter Its an active (almost too active) discussion area where there are (mostly) intelligent, confounding questions and (mostly) intelligent, insightful answers.
I think Ask Metafilter works because it has a large population filled with folks from all different parts and varied different backgrounds and because the one time $5 donation to join in keeps most of the bozos out.
As a librarian who is obsessing over questions at the moment, I love Ask Metafilter but I know I'm late to the game as jessamyn from librarian.net has been answering questions there for a while now.

I haven't listed every option that Metafilter has, this is less of a sitemap and more of a general path to follow when constructing a new sitemap.
Metafilter isn't defined by it's design, it is defined by it's member contributions.
The reason for doing this is the understanding that those who spend a lot of time on Metafilter probably already have it in a feed or would like to put it in a feed.

 refi : metafilter in review
Perhaps not surprising: people mostly kept their negative definitions of Metafilter's thesis to Metatalk threads, and mostly spoke about Metafilter threads—a few AskMe references popped up, but they were very much in the minority, despite AskMe featuring nearly as many threads as MeFi at this point.

 MetaFilter.com: a great weblog | csmonitor.com
MetaFilter is one of the sometimes confusing class of sites known as 'weblogs.' In the original sense of the word, a weblog is a regularly updated collection of found links, commentaries, and personal reflections, maintained by a single person.
Fortunately, MetaFilter falls into the first category, with the distinction that contributions are not made by a single person - this blog has more than 12,000 contributors, and when it comes to scouring the Web, numbers matter.
MetaFilter claims that its topic "tend to run intelligent and civil," and that's largely the case with both the topics and the Comments pages - however there are lapses, and from time to time, language enters the realm of PG-13, and Comments contributors abandon the discussion for personal attacks.

In fact a few years ago I spend a fair amount of time hassling Matt to start regional metafilters for people of different cultures and backgrounds, arguing for a version of the site for the UK or London or a europe.metafilter.com (see also On Regional Metafilters and Matt Haughey wants me dead).
The latter approach creates URLs that either proliferate versions of the same page, or are full of query strings (which are somehow less definitive in their addressing of a page).

I thought about those Victorian-era paintings of mothers with their dead babies, of the Pieta, and of possibly the most famous and moving tribute to a parent's grief, Mahler's Kindertotenlieder.
I posted about this on Metafilter about a month ago, and am reprinting the text and links here.

village voice > screens > metafilter.com by Julian Dibbell
What's unusual about MetaFilter, rather, is that its thousands of contributors manage to make all those parts add up to a whole.
Nonetheless it's a reliable rule of thumb that if a blog isn't a scattershot case of attention deficit disorder, then it's a single-issue exercise in obsessive compulsion.
Look under the hood, and you'll find that a few simple tweaks—tight limits on the frequency of posts, for instance, and an active but light-handed pruning of redundant items—account for much of its success.
