 GamingWorld X - Metal Slug 3 Review
Metal Slug 3 for the Xbox is based on a game that’s been in the arcades for four years.
You may have heard that Metal Slug 3 is hard, and due to the continue system you may have heard that it’s even more difficult than its predecessors.
Sure, Metal Slug could have done so much more: Xbox Live co-op, more detailed stat boards, more unlockables, etc. But at the end of the day, the game shines and reaffirms the status of Metal Slug as the king of the side-scrolling shoot ‘em ups.

Game Over Online Magazine - Metal Slug 3
Metal Slug is evolved from the side scrolling shooter where one or two heroes squared off against a horde of opponents launching a barrage of projectiles, energy weapons or explosives at them.
Metal Slug 3 is easily one of the most faithful ports of a title from an arcade machine.
Metal Slug 3 is a faithful representation of that old school gaming experience, but the extremely high difficulty level, continue flaw and lack of additional features or levels past the original arcade game hinder this from restoring faith in the side scrolling genre.

The main differences between Metal Slug 4 and Metal Slug 5, incidentally, are that the earlier game is longer and arguably more difficult, while its sequel features more-impressive weapons, a little more jumping between platforms, and the ability to slide along the ground from a crouched position.
In fact, you could argue that the versions of Metal Slug 4 and Metal Slug 5 we've been playing are actually better than the originals, simply because we've yet to experience any of the noticeable slowdown that fans of the series might remember from earlier incarnations.
Another feature of the Metal Slug games that fans might be aware of is the "Vulcan fix" option, which lets you lock a number of weapons (including most of those on vehicles) at a certain firing trajectory while you continue to move your character.

Metal Slug 4 Storyline: In the year 20XX, a cyber-terrorist group has struck out at the world by unleashing a computer virus through the internet with a sole purpose of hijacking the militaries of the world’s nations.
While Metal Slug 4 is definitely the most difficult of the two games, it's also the most guilty of using the most rehashed content, with a lot of it going all the way back to the original game from nine years ago.
Metal Slug 5 takes the series in a new direction, pitting you against a new group of enemies in five new environments as well as the addition of a new sliding move for the characters.

The Meal Slug series actually returned last year with a vengeance to the Xbox and PS2 in Metal Slug 3 (a combo Metal Slug 4 and 5 will be coming next month).
Using the slugs gives you the chance to turn the metal table on your enemies by jacking the slugs (planes, tanks, and Mech-style robotic-looking giant man-o-wars) and using them to your advantage in battle.
Face it, games including Metal Slug were a lot tougher and more challenging to defeat back in the day, and MSA doesn’t wuss out by lowering the difficulty level for today’s gamer (although there are two difficulty settings to choose, even the “normal” setting is a hellacious challenge).

Regardless, since Metal Slug 3 is a port of an arcade game, it follows the same mantra as other arcade games, 'Give the player a good game for their quarter, but keep that game as short as possible.' The Metal Slug series has always been a favorite of mine and I was ecstatic that it's finally out on home consoles.

 IGN: Metal Slug 4 & 5 Preview
Metal Slug stands alone as king of the 2D action realm that was once owned by Contra, and SNK is delivering fans of the series more than it can ever hope to handle with ports of the two arcade shooters, Metal Slug 4 and Metal Slug 5, in the same combo pack.
Slug 5 seemed a little sillier in the rounds that we played, with the series' trademark humor brought out as you brave it down a running river on a canoe (with the bearded hostage working the stern paddle) and natives with bullet-proof iron masks charging from temples to kill you.
Metal Slug 4 has more than its share of comedy, but we got ourselves laughing hardest when we hit a giant boss which rained down bombs and hurled fireballs at us, while snipers plugged us full of holes from the turrets.

Like the other games in the series, Metal Slug Advance is a side-scrolling 2D shooter that puts you in the shoes of a solider up against nearly hopeless odds.
Metal Slug Advance's gameplay mostly sticks to the formula set forth by the arcade games that started the series.
Hopping in the fast-moving tank, for which the series is named, armors your character from damage, as your solider's health is replaced by your vehicle's health when you're riding.

As a fan of old-school shooters, I never get tired of a game such as SNK's Metal Slug, and this repackaging of two of the newer games in the series is sure to get some attention from fans, as well as those looking for some quick run-and-gun action.
Metal Slug 4 & 5 include different vehicles and power-ups, and at some points, you'll find yourself on the other spectrum of life, wandering around as a zombie and wiping out enemy soldiers with some powerful puking skills.
I still recommend Metal Slug 4 & 5 because, although it's nothing incredibly new, its gameplay is spot on and it has this awesome retro feel.

Metal Slug is a sidescrolling arcade shooter of the Contra school, but it bears little resemblance to that game; instead, it's sprite-based gaming as animated by an obsessive-compulsive and his crew of sadists.
The mediocre one is Metal Slug 4, which features a new character, Nadia, but removes a surprising amount of the variety that makes Metal Slug worth playing.
It'd be a little more worthwhile if an arcade-perfect Metal Slug 3 had been included in the collection, but this is still a must-have for those of us who fondly remember our local arcade.

Metal Slug 3 Review - Xbox Review - Australia's PAL Gaming Network
Metal Slug 3 is easy to control, as you move left to right literally firing at everything on screen.
Before the PAL release, Metal Slug 3 for the Xbox, incorporated a continue system which forced players to restart each level from the beginning (rather than the spot they died at) in an attempt to up the challenge.
Metal Slug 3 for the Xbox as it stands is the best port of the game to date, despite its disappointing lack of extra content and presently is the best 2D side-scrolling shooting game that you will find for the console with the added bonus of a budget price.

Metal Slug Advance does shy a little bit away from the series' formula in terms of the characters and the fact that you don't die with just one hit, but it still feels and sounds like Metal Slug, and it packs enough gun-toting action to keep your thumbs busy for days.
The sound is typical Metal Slug, with a score that isn't annoying at all and manages to complement the action.
Metal Slug Advance is still a top-notch entry in the series, and fans who have stuck with it for so long with still find plenty of action to soak in here.
