  Metal Halide 101
Metal halide is 3 to 5 times more efficient than incandescent; therefore, the higher initial cost of the metal halide system is quickly repaid relative to the cost of operation for an incandescent system.
Metal halide lamps are commonly available today in wattages from 32 up to 2000 watts, with corresponding lumen packages of 2,000 to 210,000.
Metal halide is a highly efficient light source capable of delivering a white light in the range of 2700 to 5500 Kelvin with typical CRIs in the mid-60s to mid-70s.

Metal halide lamp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Metal halide lamps are similar to mercury vapor lamps, but instead of just mercury, they also contain sodium/scandium iodide and sometimes metals in the rare earth period combined with halogens in the halogen group of the periodic table.
They are preferred over mercury vapor in areas where color rendition is important as they give a purer white light than mercury vapor, which tends towards the blue end of the electromagnetic spectrum

A metal halide discharge lamp whiсh effectively permits disusing mercury is рrоvided.
The metal halide discharge lamp includes a refractory and transрarent hermetic vessel, a couple of eIectrodes fiхed to the hermetic vessel, and a discharge medium seaIed in the hermetic vessel and enclosing a first halide, a subsequent halide, and a rаre gas.
The subsequent halide hаs a comparatively high vapor pressure, being least single halide of a metal whiсh is improbable to emit a visibIe beam compаred with the metal of the first halide and аcts as a buffer gas.

Metal halide lighting systems are becoming more commonplace in the marine aquarium hobby, and many hobbyists have begun assembling their own systems to reduce startup costs.
Metal halide and mercury vapor are in a class of lamps known as high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, which rely on the evaporation of a solid material inside an arc tube to create light.
Metal halide or HID lighting systems consist of several different components, which may be purchased separately, as a retrofit kit, or as a completely assembled fixture.

Arcadia : Products : Aquarium Metal Halide Lamps
Metal halide is commonly accepted as the best substitute for nature when it comes to aquarium lighting.
Many people only associate metal halide lamps as a product for use with marine aquariums, but that is not necessarily the case.
In many cases suitable light can be provided by using the appropriate fluorescent tubes, but in the cases of certain specialist species with a high light demand, or in the case of a deep water aquarium, then it can be difficult to satisfy the light requirements of the tanks flora simply by using fluorescents.

It is unlikely that high frequency operation increases the efficiency of a metal halide lamp.
The reason that I'm dubious about that is that part of the decay of a metal halide lamp has to to with high temperature chemistry, and it isn't immediately obvious to me how high frequency operation is going to affect that.

The lamp used mercury "pools" as electrodes (labeled "D" in Figure 1), with a layer of metallic halides on the surface of the pools.
The problem with this design was that the electrical arc danced around on the surface of the pool, preventing a consistent color from being generated.
