Topic: Metanalysis

Metanalysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In linguistics, metanalysis is the act of breaking down a word or phrase into segments or meanings not original to it.
Metanalysis across words: an adder was originally a nadder, and an apron a napron, but the initial n was metanalyzed as belonging to the article instead of the noun.
Metanalysis of phrases: "It is good for a man not to touch a woman" (I Cor.

Metanalysis is a technical term in linguistics that was coined in 1914 by Otto Jespersen, a Danish linguist who was one of the great grammarians of English.
Metanalysis can be broadly defined as 'a reinterpretation of the division between words or syntactic units', as the Oxford English Dictionary does.
Sometimes metanalysis is given an especially broad range, where it is applied to any process of counter-etymological regularization--as when the plural of Walkman becomes Walkmans instead of Walkmen, or when the nonce past tense of sing-song is sing-songed instead of sang-song.

Dr. Cattaneo presented evidence from several studies and recent metanalysis on the association between high homocysteine levels and risk of cardiovascular disease; in particular he showed that only in retrospective case-control studies or prospective studies in patients who already had an ischaemic event, a consistent association between homocysteine and CVD was demonstrated.
However a recent publication by performing a metanalysis of several candidate genes associated to a number of different clinical phenotypes demonstrated that the candidate gene approach is indeed able to detect genetic associations, although the extent of the association is small.
This is a metanalysis on the relationship between fibrinogen and CVD in prospective studies, with the main aim to assess: associations, potential confounders, regression dilution, shape of dose-response relationship.

In a metanalysis of published papers, researchers from Canada and Australia determined men have a 50 percent greater risk of suffering a recurrent venous thromboembolism -- a potentially fatal condition consisting of either deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism -- than women.
In this metanalysis, the authors found the risk in men within one year was 16 percent for a recurring clot, and for women it was 6 percent.
Although this recent metanalysis is a worthy investigation, it's "a little bit strange" that the actual incidence of blood clots in men and women are equal, but the rate of recurrence is not, White said.

Junctural metanalysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Junctural metanalysis is the process by which new words are formed from confusion over the boundaries of words.
The most cited examples of junctural metanalysis involve of words which are preceded by the indefinite article ("a" or "an"): some words that began with an initial vowel gained an "n" as speakers came to associate the "n" from the indefinite article ("an") with the word itself.
Junctural metanalysis of a different sort, involving confusion over a final "s" rather than an initial "n", accounts for the word "pea".

They concluded that "metanalysis is not an exact science and does not provide definitive simple answers to complex clinical problems."  Abstract
We carried out a metanalysis of the reported studies on the role of HR2 haplotype in inducing a risk of VTE and the influence of the polymorphism on the risk carried by FV Leiden.
This magnitude did not change when this risk was analyzed by including FV Leiden/HR2 heterozygous carriers, thus confirming that it was conferred by FV Leiden carrier-ship alone and no additive/multiplicative effect was present.
In conclusion, the data from the present metanalysis suggests that FVHR2 is probably a mild prothrombotic factor.

The BASKET study found that at 18 months, the rate of death or myocardial infarction was 8.4% for patients treated with drug-eluting stents and 7.5% for bare-metal stents, but that difference was not statistically significant.

WASHINGTON, July 27 (UPI) -- Men with a blood clot history are more likely to suffer a recurring clot than women with the same background, according to a review of recent studies.

However, Richard White, a professor of medicine at University of California at Davis, will not tell his male patients who have had a blood clot that their risk of recurrence is higher than women.

Problems in the use of urinalysis results in metanalysis of RCTs on drug Dependence. The most common outcomes reported in drug treatment studies are self-reported drug use and use of drugs based on urine analysis for drug metabolites.
In these studies, urine samples are usually collected regularly over time for each patient, and are best understood as multiple binary (dichotomous) outcomes.
The minimum result would be indication for proper reporting of urinalysis results in future publications, and it may prove necessary to have software written in RevMan to deal with such multiple binary outcomes.
