The setting is a near-future dystopian version of Los Angeles, where franchising, individual sovereignty and automobiles reign supreme (along with drug trafficking, violent crime, and traffic congestion).

Instead of web pages, a metaverse server will serve up the data and contents of a 3-D virtual world that can be customized by the administrator.

You can’t just materialize in the Metaverse, you must drop in on a Port and then you can use the Street or hop on a monorail or go wherever you want, or are allowed to go.
If there is a war in the Metaverse no real fluid blood will be shed and no dog tags need to be sent home to grieving mothers because experiences like that aren’t really happening, but are acted out inside computers connected to the Metaverse from all over the real world.

He owns a futon, two awesome Japanese swords, and a laptop computer, where he stays "jacked in" to the "Metaverse" a lot of the time, where he is the world's greatest swordfighter.
The metaverse was a very interesting concept - and not as far off as it seems.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2/3 of the book, as it dealt with a lot of the use of the Metaverse, but it seemed as though Stephenson got away from that in the last couple of chapters, and the ending was a little flat for me.
