There were no steps and the main access to the monasteries was by means of a net that was hitched over a hook and hoisted up by rope and a hand cranked windlass to winch towers overhanging the chasm.
By the 18th century, Meteora had become a refuge center for Greeks escaping the increasingly harsh administration and taxation of the Ottoman overlords as well as a hideout of the klephts, rebel warriors who harassed the Turks and participated in the fight for independence in the 19th century.

Expect monster sales again with ''Meteora.'' The music is not a radical departure from ''Hybrid Theory''' (many songs echo tracks from that disc), but the energy is again off the charts and there's even a touch more optimism this time.
However, Meteora is just as good as Hybrid Theory, and don’t worry, while the softy first single "Somewhere I Belong" would have you believe otherwise, there’s definitely no abundance of light and fluffy tracks here.

The Meteora monasteries rise at the centre of Greece, where Pinios river emerges from the deep canyons of the Pindus range and surges into the Thessalian plain.
These are gigantic rocks etched by time into a variety of shapes; grey stalagmites rising towards the sky, they appear as nature's gift to the pious who, dnven by faith, have opted for solitude and a life of worship.
On the left of the road to the monasteries, at the foot of the Meteora, stands Doupiani hermitage and the 12th century chapel of the Virgin.

The common denominator between the band and its antecedents is psychology: Whereas, say, Pink Floyd grappled with insanity, LP dramatize the conflicts of father and son, man and woman, or friend and friend -- all from the vantage point of a young guy struggling for harmony with or separation from an unnamed "you."
Meteora celebrates the hard-won clarity that comes when getting within screaming distance of one's demons.

Linkin Park : Meteora - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Perhaps if the cut-'n'-paste remix record Reanimation hadn't appeared as a stopgap measure in the summer of 2002, Linkin Park's second record, Meteora, would merely have been seen as a continuation of their 2000 debut, Hybrid Theory, instead of a retreat to familiar ground.
More importantly, the group has discipline and editing skills, keeping this record at a tight 36 minutes and 41 seconds, a move that makes it considerably more listenable than its peers and, by extension, more powerful, since they know where to focus their energy, something that many nu-metal bands simply do not.
Since this is only their second go-round, this is hardly a fatal flaw, but the similarity of Meteora to Hybrid Theory does not only raise the question of where do they go from here, but whether there is a place for them to go at all.
