Methyl formate, also called methyl methanoate, is the methyl ester of formic acid.
Industrial methyl formate, however, is usually produced by the combination of methanol and carbon monoxide in the presence of a strong base:
Methyl formate is used primarily to manufacture formamide, dimethylformamide, and formic acid.

 METHYL FORMATE (METHYL METHANOATE)
Commercial methyl formate is produced from methanol with carbon monoxide in the presence of strong base.
The predominant use of methyl formate is in the preparation of formamide and dimethylformamide.
Methyl formate is used as the raw material of formic acid which find application as a chemical intermediate and solvent, in processing textiles, leathers, electroplating, in coagulating latex rubber, and as a disinfectant.

These indicate the methyl formate ratio which is increased from 0% stepwise through 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% to 80% by mole along the direction of the arrow shown in the graph.
In order that the formation of an azeotropic mixture of dimethoxymethylsilane and methanol is avoided, the amount of methyl formate in the liquid phase throughout the distillation column is preferably not less than 20% by mole, more preferably not less than 30% by mole and most preferably not less than 40% by mole.
Thus, the balance fraction comprising methyl formate and dimethoxymethylsilane from the extractive distillation (usually, discharged from the distillation as a bottom fraction during a continuous mode) may be subjected to a conventional distillation and it is easily separated into methyl formate and dimethoxymethylsilane.

There is limited information that methyl formate may be absorbed through the skin.(1,4) It is not known if health effects would result from this route of exposure.
The liquid is expected to cause moderate to severe irritation, based on comparison to a closely related chemical, ethyl formate, and the fact that methyl formate reacts slowly with water to form corrosive formic acid (1).

To Grow, Stars and Planets Need Space Dust . . . And Formaldehyde?
Based on telescope data, if the gaseous methyl formate condensed into liquid form, a typical dust cloud would contain a thousand trillion trillion gallons of the chemical.
While scientists have long known that hydrogen is the most common chemical element in the universe, just 10 years ago Herbst -- a professor of physics, chemistry, and astronomy -- and his colleagues discovered that there were also large quantities of alcohol in dust clouds in space.
Herbst and Ohio State postdoctoral researcher Helen Roberts used that data to construct a new model of how such reactions happen in space, and then used the model to predict how much methyl formate would be found in the typical interstellar dust cloud.

Methyl formate was discovered in 1975 and is the most abundant species of these isomers, Acetic Acid was discovered in 1997 and is the least abundant species, and Glycolaldehyde, the simplest sugar, was discovered in May 2000 at the NRAO 12 Meter telescope at Kitt Peak, Arizona.
