Methylated spirit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Methylated spirit (or Meths, also denatured alcohol) is ethanol which has been rendered toxic or otherwise undrinkable, and in some cases dyed.
The ethanol molecule is not denatured in the sense that its chemical structure is altered.
Methylated spirits is often also used for its solvent properties, for example to remove ink stains from upholstery or clothes.

DOE - Fossil Energy: DOE's Methane Hydrate R&D Program   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
A methane hydrate is a cage-like lattice of ice, inside of which are trapped molecules of methane (the chief constituent of natural gas).
Methane hydrate form in generally two types of geologic settings: (1) on land in permafrost regions where cold temperatures persist in shallow sediments, and (2) beneath the ocean floor at water depths greater than about 500 meters (about 1,640 feet) where high pressures dominate.

The early atmosphere of Earth contained methane and as the polar icecaps formed, the methane became trapped in the hexagonal channels to produce compounds which are called gas or methyl hydrates.

More and more methane hydrate is being discovered in parts of the world that have the frigid temperatures and the pressures needed for its formation.
Worldwide, industry appraisals are that hydrates could contain 700,000 trillion cubic feet of gas, which is 100 times bigger than conventional gas resources estimated at 7,000 trillion cubic feet.
In Alaska, 590 trillion cubic feet of methane hydrate is believed to be onshore, with an even larger 168,000 trillion cubic feet offshore.

Canadian research team drills for gas hydrate deposits
Gas hydrates are mix of natural gas (mostly methane) and ice that form under pressure in cold water.
Depending on how much methane is sequestered in gas hydrates, one theory goes that a relatively small temperature rise in the ocean could hasten global warming as the methane bubbled off.
But perhaps the main reason methyl hydrates are such a hot research topic is that methane is a relatively clean fossil fuel, the main hydrocarbon in natural gas.

Made a test batch, now what? - Topic Powered by eve community
29 May 2002 10:32 PM OK, after finding out that methanol and methyl hydrate are the same thing (?), and that common drain cleaner is NaOH (sometimes with onknown additives), I ran down to the hardware store, bought these, a candy/deepfryer thermometer and a 500ml glass measuring cup.
I couldn't find a scale that would measure precisley enough to produce a mini batch (closest was in 10 g graduations)., and the drain cleaner I bought contained aluminum shavings and was tinted blue.
I started with 250ml of methyl hydrate and mixed in an unknown amount of drain cleaner(I tried to pick out the aluminum bits but this was ridiculously tedious, and being a first test batch, I said "screw it" and left them in) but guessing around 4 gm's.
