Metlika is a border town with the position between Gorjanci hills and the Kolpa River plain.
Metlika is a political, economical in cultural centre of the northeastern part of Bela krajina.
The old centre of Metlika was built nearby the Metlika castle because of the better deffence against the Turks attacks in the 14th century.

Researchers have established that Metlika is the oldest city in the Dolenjska and Bela krajina regions.
During the period of the Gorizia counts, Metlika was the district seat for Bela Krajina, its head was a deputy of the provincial prince, and the town had its own court.
The sculptor Alojzij Gangl was born in Metlika in 1895 and died in Prague in 1935.

The founder of the museum is Slovenian Fire-fighters Association and Metlika was chosen because of the fact that the first volunteer fire-fighters association in Slovenia was established here on 18 th of September 1869.
