MADISON, Village, the capital of Wisconsin, and seat of justice of the county of Dane, is situated on sections 13, 14, 23 and 24, in town of same name, at the geographical centre of the county, and midway between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi river, being about 80 miles from each.
METOMEN, P. V., is on section 10, in town of same name, being town 15 N., of range 14 E. It is in Fond du Lac county, 20 miles west from the county seat, with which it is connected by a plank road, and is 65 miles northeast from Madison.
MINERAL, Creek, is a tributary from the Wisconsin, from the south, in Iowa county.

 Metomen Township, Wisconsin: Interpreting the 1870 Federal Census
In 1860, the eve of the American Civil War, the population of the town of Metomen was 1611.
Behind the steady growth in Metomen's population and the apparent constancy in its composition, several important changes were taking place during the decade of the 1860's.
In contrast to the evenly distributed German population, all of the 7 Dutch families in Metomen were living in the Brandon area, while 4 of the 5 Danish families were living in the immediate vicinity of Fairwater.

DANIEL EGGLESTON, farmer and first settler in Metomen Township; P. Brandon; was born March 21, 1812, in Greenwich, Washington Co., N. Y.; lived with his parents on the farm till 22 years of age, then moved to Onandaga Co., N. where he kept hotel four years at Clintonville.
Eggleston is a moral citizen and a friend of churches; politically, is a Republican; financially, solid, and, historically, the standard-bearer of the Pioneer Corps in the town of Metomen.
He came to Metomen Township, on his present farm, in May, 1866; be has 100 acres, of which eighty are under the plow.

This reputation is sustained by the taxes paid in 1879 by Metomen, which were about $300 in excess of those in any other town.
Much of the land is higher than any of the surrounding country - in, in fact, a watershed from which the streams flow southeasterly, northerly, and westerly.

REED] had married Miss Asenath D. [BUCK], daughter of Walter and Jerusha BUCK, of Brookfield [Orange County], Vermont.
It was here [Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin] they buried their oldest [child] and only son, Azro De Estang [REED], who was a Lieutenant in Daniel's 1st Cavalry, and was taken with the diphtheria at Ripon [Fond du Lac County].
In 1877 he was sent by the Conference to the church at Sharon [Sharon Township, Walworth County], Wisconsin, for two years, and then in the fall of 1879 to the village of Randolph [Dodge County], Wisconsin.

Doty had an eye to the transportation possibilities of Lake Winnebago and the construction of a canal to the the Rock River at the Horicon marsh and another to Sheboygan on Lake Michigan.
Through Doty's lobbying efforts, the prospective city was made a candidate for the new Wisconsin territorial capital, although there were fewer than 140 white settlers in the entire county as late as the federal census of 1840.
In far western Fond du Lac County, the population of Metomen, first settled in 1844, grew from 460 in 1847 to 720 by 1850 and 1617 by 1860.
