		A sequence does not have to modulate; a modulating sequence is known as a rosalia.
		Metric modulation (known also as tempo modulation) is the most common, while timbral modulation (gradual changes in tone color), and spatial modulation (changing the location from which sound occurs) are also used.
		Modulation may also occur from a single tonality to a polytonality, often by beginning with a duplicated tonic chord and modulating the chords in contrary motion until the desired polytonality is reached.

		What he actually does isn´t called metric modulation - that would be to change from one time signature to another one while the pulse also changes, say go from 4/4 into 6/8 while the dotted quarter note becomes the new pulse.
		Typically metric modulation is a little more straight-foward in that the 8th note (written) in a 12/8 becomes the 8th note (felt and written) in a 4/4 measure, thus the tempo change but the 8th note (written) stays a constant tempo but the toe-tapping down beats shift.
		metric modulation is to drums as modulation is to a piano, or harmonic instrument.

		The last few days' thoughts have been consumed with the topic of metric modulation - a compositonal tool for adding an accelerando or retardation feel to a piece of music.
		Using a section from Dream Theater's "Hell's Kitchen" as an example: The latter sections of the song alternate 12/8 and 10/8 signatures, but there's 1 bar that is marked 4/4.
		The whole thing started with Steve Vai and a song of his called "Incantation." His exact words about (the metric modulation within) the song is "the quarter note triplet becomes 'one'...the eighth note."
