Metrication or metrification is the process of converting from the various other systems of units used throughout the world to the SI metric system.
The "metric martyrs" were shop owners in the UK who were fined for refusing to use metric units and for overcharging in response to metric customer requests.
This is a result of the introduction of PET bottling technology coinciding with a particularly strong metrication push in the mid to late 1970s; consumers found that they could buy a two-liter plastic bottle of their favorite soft drink more cheaply than they could four one-pint glass bottles, and the convention stuck.

UK metrication and the EU It was a condition of the UK's entry into the European Economic Community (now called the European Union) that the UK, along with Ireland, would convert all trade and production to the metric system by the 1st of January 1978.
The estimated costs of metrication in the UK range from near zero to a 1970 estimate of £5bn (about £50bn in 2002 pounds [7]) by opponents of the change.

UK legislation: laws debated and passed by parliament in the normal way.
Currently, the UK is the only country in the world whose road sign regulations do not include metric units as options for distances, despite widespread use of metres in the Highway Code, and roads having been designed and built in metric for decades.
It is the view of the UKMA that these regulations fall foul of the EU directive on metrication (which was made part of UK law by The Units of Measurement Regulations 1995).

Metrication in the UK In 1971, Great Britain changed over to the decimal system of coinage.
BUT –more than 30 years on, the UK is still locked into this dual system for recipes despite the fact that all measuring utensils, cookers, etc., are printed in metric and at least one new generation has grown up being taught in metric.
This does not mean we necessarily advocate cooking in metric as a superior system to Imperial, simply that it was cast in legislative stone decades back and in the absence of any clear Government help we have had to draw up our own guidelines and help our readers as much as possible.
