Topic: Metriorhynchidae

  S. Hua & V. Buffrénil - DGF Online Series
A morphofunctional analysis of the skeleton of the Metriorhynchidae (Crocodylia, Mesosuchia) suggests that these crocodilians were epipelagic stalking predator.
In fact, the Metriorhynchidae may be regarded as epipelagic accelerator swimmers but the search for scattered preys made some sustained swimmer adaptations necessary, making them generalist swimmers.
In order to confirm or falsify the hypothesis that the Metriorhynchidae were epipelagic stalking hunter, a histological analysis was performed on samples of metriorhynchid skeletons: skull, humerus, vertebrae, ribs, femur and fibula.

In the Teleosauridae the limbs have become shorter and the snouts have become larger.
Another group is the Metriorhynchidae which have become highly adapted to water living.
For example their forelimbs have become transformed into paddles.

The histological study of various bones in the families Teleosauridae and Metriorhynchidae reveals common, but also contrasting structural features of the skeleton.
Conversely, the skeleton of the Metriorhynchidae displays a certain degree of structural lightening, especially obvious in their skull, but also present in their femora and ribs.
This structural specialization of the skeleton, together with the supposed physiological regime of the Metriorhynchidae, had definite bearings on their body trim in water, locomotor capabilities, and activity cycles.

The bearing levels belong mostly to the Jagua Vieja Member of the Jagua Formation (middle reptiles are particularly important because of their geographic location and because of their age, since middleupper Oxfordian records are not frequent worldwide.Among the Cuban marine reptiles prevail the pelagic forms that frequently rambled in near shore environments.
This was the case of long-necked plesiosaurs (Cryptoclididae: Vinialesaurus caroli), crocodiles (Metriorhynchidae: Geosausus sp.), and turtles (Pleurodira: Caribemys oxfordiensis).
The relative vicinity of the shore, of the marine environments in which these reptiles are recorded, is supported also by the presence of pterosaurs (Rhamphorhynchidae: Nesodactylus and a new taxon), isolated post-cranial fragments of sauropod dinosaurs, and abundant plant remains, particularly logs.

It may have been related to mosasauroidea, yet it was not a member of the lineage.
It resembled something between mosasauroidea and metriorhynchidae, yet its body was thinner than metriorhynchidae or even teleosauridae, practically a reptilian skeleton with scales.
It did not possess fins nor flippers like metriorhynchidae nor mosasauroidea, but rather was tailed and legged, with a long and narrow jaw that would make a crocodile look cuddly.

Upuntil now, the known distribution of Liassic Thalattosuchia suggested a circumpacific distribution with minimally episodic passages through the Caribbean Corridor.
Nevertheless, the close affinities between the South American and the European Metriorhynchidae from the Callovian to the Tithonian suggest the possibility that more and more frequent communications were made via the Caribbean Corridor.
The new data corroborate the hypothesis formulated from the invertebrate faunas.
