  Profits double at Germany's Metro - Boston.com
Metro AG, Germany's biggest retailer, said Wednesday that full-year net income almost doubled as recently acquired businesses contributed to earnings for the first time and the company sold its remaining stake in the Praktiker home improvement chain.
Metro spent 987 million euros ($1.31 billion) on acquisitions in 2006, while earning 484 million euros ($643.6 million) from the sale of Romania-based Praktiker.
Metro also aims to increase earnings before interest and taxes in the same period by 8 percent to 9 percent from the 1.91 billion euros posted in 2006.

German retailer Metro AG said Tuesday that its second-quarter net profit jumped by more than 88 percent because of improved sales abroad and a gain from the disposal of its Praktiker unit.
Metro achieved "distinct increases in terms of sales and earnings, not only abroad but also in the domestic market," CEO Hans-Joachim Koerber said.
Metro is one of the world's largest retailers, operating more than 2,100 stores in 30 countries worldwide.
