 Railway Technology - Tyne & Wear Metro Rapid Transit System - United Kingdom
Regeneration of areas alongside the Metro system was boosted in 2002 by the new 18.5km Sunderland extension, of which 14km is on existing heavy rail line between Pelaw and Sunderland and 4.5km – south of Sunderland to South Hylton – on a disused railway alignment.
In the early 1970s, poor public transport was pinpointed as a serious brake on the area's economic development and although a heavy rail system radiated from Newcastle city centre to many outlying areas, it was not suitable for modern demands.
Metro operator Nexus is now developing a £500m spending plan for the next ten years, which will controversially involve private finance because the UK government does not have the resources as has been the case until now.

Cammell Laird was started in 1824 by a William Laird, a Scottish entrepreneur, who like many of his fellow Scots moved to the River Mersey to seek his fortune.
Cammell Laird also completed three aircraft carriers, two fleet carriers both named HMS Ark Royal in 1939 and 1950, and the smaller HMS Venerable of 1943 which was sold to the Dutch navy.
This Cammell Laird site is one of these key strategic assets and must be safeguarded and protected from development that could jeopardise the use of this important facility and its No 5 drydock in the future.

 Tyne & Wear Transport Group
It must be remembered that ‘light rail’ vehicles had never been constructed in the UK before, unless you count the small scale London Underground rolling stock, which Metro-Cammell was noted for.
The vehicles were based on standard European ‘Metro’ designs, notably the German Stadtbahnwagen B, however, the exterior appearance of the prototypes would be very similar to the mock-up produced in 1973.
Once the contract had been placed, Metro-Cammell sub-contracted the electrical equipment to GEC Traction Ltd., with the bogies and articulation contract going to the German Duwag company, recognised specialists in this field.

Four Metro Scania were bought for the super bus service in Stevenage in 1972 and designated MS.
Since the prototype was an MCW demonstrator (made in Birmingham) it would have carried a 'local' registration number, hence the Warwickshire index.
MCW stands for Metro Cammell Weymann, and this was an amalgam of two company's, Weymann and Metro-Cammell which had previously been Cammell-Laird just to complicate matters!

 ^^^^ monotonik :: mono ^^^^
The EP leads off with "Bacurex", a tour de force of understated, melodically dense electronics in the tradition of the best B12 or Black Dog releases.
And "Metro Cammell", the second track, stuns further, with percussion looping down like shooting stars and melodies soaring up like rockets - and when the song breaks down and gets all ambientribal, the listener soars too.
Monotonik is proud to have been associated, if only peripherally, with the rebirth of the early 90s 'Artificial Intelligence' vibe through labels like DeFocus and Neo-Ouija, and here's another prime example.
