What's the best MetroCard option for you? (kottke.org)
In trying to determine which MetroCard has the best value for its holder, Grant has done some great analysis of the various options (PDF) for the New York City subways and buses.

 MetroCard Jam Scam
Subway scammers are zeroing in on MetroCard vending machines and stealing riders’ cash.  On some of the $50,000 machines, vandals have clogged the return slots that spit back bills that were rejected because they were damaged or were submitted incorrectly.
TA spokesman Al O’Leary described the latest subway con as a variation on the older illegal trick of vandals’ clogging slots in turnstiles and then retrieving the tokens — a practice greatly diminished because the vast majority of riders use Metro-Cards.
Transport Workers Union Local 100  said the MetroCard machine scam is another reason why the TA should halt plans to eventually eliminate token booth clerks.
