Metroad 1 is a Metroad in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
It follows what was previously National Route 1, from Metroad 7 at Pearces Corner in Wahroonga south-east to the CBD then from the CBD south-west to the F6 Southern Freeway at Waterfall.
The M1 Eastern Distributor motorway was opened in July 2000, replacing sections of Metroad 1 between the Cahill Expressway along South Dowling Street to Southern Cross Drive.

The routes surveyed were: Metroad 2 from Macquarie Street, Windsor to the Sydney Harbour Bridge; Metroad 3 from Pittwater Road, Mona Vale to Princes Highway, Blakehurst; Metroad 6 from Pennant Hills Road, Carlingford to Princes Highway, Engadine; Metroad 9 from George Street, Windsor to Hume Highway (F5), Campbelltown.
On most of the Metroads, around 50 per cent of the sections were assessed as having non-compliant speed limits, but on Metroad 9, the figure was 80 per cent.
Another example is on Metroad 9, where there is a 60 km/h zone on the Northern Road on the outskirts of Narellan (wide lanes, shoulders, overtaking lane), but an 80 km/h zone on the section of Northern Road near Badgerys Creek (2 narrow lanes, no shoulders).

 Metroads of Sydney
Metroads are divided up into two types - radial Metroads, which connect the outer suburbs with the city centre of Sydney; and circumferential Metroads, which are major by-pass routes around the Metropolitan area.
There are now nine Metroads in Sydney numbered from 1 to 10 (Metroad 8 has been reserved for future use - my guess is that it will be used for the much needed and long awaited Western Sydney Orbital freeway).
The Metroad system is in a continual process of refinement; routes are continually expanding and contracting and are often being adjusted.

For their respective parts, Sydney and Brisbane have Metroads, derived from partial local routings of state and national routes, consisting of city-specific beltway and radial highways and freeways designed to facilitate easy destination-oriented navigation; Canberra and ACT have coloured Tourist Route signage that allows designated access to popular termini.
Radial Metroads connect the city centre to the suburbs, and circumferential Metrods act as bypasses.

Metroad 1 directly replaced National Route 1, the major north-south highway through Sydney.
While not the major through route between its two endpoints, Metroad 1 still serves a large amount of traffic - a high percentage of which is commuter traffic - as well as the airport and the Port Botany industrial area.
The majority of the route was constructed prior to the introducation of Metroad 1 - the only significant construction since 1993 being the Eastern Distributor and some reconstruction due to the M5 East near the Airport Tunnel.

It was created for three distinct purposes: 1) to connect principal metropolitan areas in as direct as fashion as possible; 2) to serve the national defense; and 3) to connect to suitable border crossings where possible.
Major N-S routes end in 5, not 1, and while numbers ending in 0 are significant E-W routes, they are not necessarily transcontinental like US routes are (or, depending on alignment changes, historically were).
For still and archival photography, this means: 1) no use of photographs that are specifically not permitted for redistribution; 2) no alteration of content, other than cropping or labeling for clarity; and 3) clear designation of the actual copyright holder, where known, either in the accompanying text or labeled on the image itself.

Metroad 5 Did You Mean metroad?
Metroad 5 (M5) is a main arterial route linking Sydney's city centre to its south western suburbs and beyond.
Finally in 2003, the state government opened a new, completely grade seperated interchange at Moorebank Avenue, meaning that not only the entire length of Metroad 5 is now freeway standard, but the entire route from Canberra to Sydney is now high speed dual carriageway.
While the entire route is officially referred to as the "M5", colloquially, most only refer to the South Western Motorway and M5 East sections as the "M5", continuing to refer to the remander as the "F5" or as the Hume Highway.

 Brisbane Metroads - SkyscraperCity
The confusion appears to arise because Metroads in Sydney have been colloquially referred to with an 'M' prefix, rather than a 'Metroad' prefix.
We've started the transition but the RTA is short on funds to implement it apparently, so in the meantime they are signing things on an as needs basis and plonking coverplates on them.
So route 1 for example changes from M1 at Cooroy to A1, and any significant sections of motorway north of this point will bear the M prefix when they are upgraded to a motorway (the Douglas Arterial would be one of them, once it's duplicated).

The Gateway Motorway runs from Drewvale (Metroad 4) (where it connects with the Logan Motorway (Metroad 4 and 6)) to Bald Hills in Brisbane's north where it connects with the Gympie Arterial Road (Metroad 3) and the Bruce Highway (M1).
In this section we only look at the M1 part of the road, which began life in the 1980s as the Gateway Arterial Road, it was eventualy upgraded to full motorway standard with overpasses and interchanges completed at major junctions and roundabouts that were placed in the early stages of the roadway.
If you turn right at the interchange and go under the freeway, you are on Metroad 2, which eventually connects with the Warrego Highway (NH-A2) and the Cunningham Highway (NH15) at Dinmore near Ipswich.

Metroad 5 (Sydney) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From Kingsgrove, the M5 passes underground in a 4km long tunnel, emerging briefly before again passing underground beneath the Cooks River, finally emerging above ground at General Holmes Drive (Metroad 1).
Confusion also arises from the different ownership of each section, especially as people incorrectly assume the M in M5 stands for "motorway" rather than "metroad".
This often leads to unfounded complaints about the apparent "unfairness" of the tolling system, as users of the M5 East Freeway section do not pay a toll, yet the users of the South West Motorway section do.
