Metroads are the primary road routes serving the Australian cities of Sydney and Brisbane metropolitan area.
Metroads are given the designation M (number), or Metroad (number).
Segments of motorway forming a Metroad are given the same designation; for example, the 'M2' Motorway (officially the Hills Motorway) forms part of Metroad 2.

In its previous incarnations, it was Ring Road 3 in the 1970s and State Route 33 in the 1980s.
It crosses Pacific Highway (Metroad 1) at Pymble, Western Motorway (Metroad 4) at Homebush and South Western Motorway (Metroad 5) at Beverly Hills.

The '5' in the hexagon means Metroad 5 (the route from central Sydney to the south-western suburbs), the '56' is a State Route marker, and is used in all but two states.
As noted elsewhere on my website, Metroads are simply markers used on the most major arterial routes in metropolitan areas designed to get people in to and out of the city centre (radial Metroads), and also to bypass the city centre (circumferential Metroads).
Metroad 3 is the main north-south bypass around Sydney, and often becomes wonderfully choked.

The routes surveyed were: Metroad 2 from Macquarie Street, Windsor to the Sydney Harbour Bridge; Metroad 3 from Pittwater Road, Mona Vale to Princes Highway, Blakehurst; Metroad 6 from Pennant Hills Road, Carlingford to Princes Highway, Engadine; Metroad 9 from George Street, Windsor to Hume Highway (F5), Campbelltown.
For example, on Metroad 3, a 70 km/h limit applies on Mona Vale Road, Pymble (6-lane divided road with central crash barrier - see photo 1, page 17) but the same limit also applies on King Georges Road, Hurstville (4 lanes, undivided with more frequent access - see photo 2, page 17).
Another example is on Metroad 9, where there is a 60 km/h zone on the Northern Road on the outskirts of Narellan (wide lanes, shoulders, overtaking lane), but an 80 km/h zone on the section of Northern Road near Badgerys Creek (2 narrow lanes, no shoulders).

In Sydney, the main routes to and around the city are called Metroads and they have their own distinctive hexagon shaped route markers.
This photo shows a correctly coloured Metroad route marker (or sheild) but it is in the shape of a National route sheild.

The first, and most obvious, is the Metroad and State Route system which classifies major roads based on their route to and through the suburbs.
Introduced in 1995, the Metroads streamlined the road network for through traffic across the metropolitan area linking the entering inter-state and inter-regional highways.
The National Highway follows Metroads 2 and 1 across Brisbane, joining it with the southern end of the Bruce Highway.
