  Superchunk: Press
Their catalog of five albums (as well as two full length singles compilations) has received consistently positive critical response and spawned, in conjunction with their Herculean touring schedules, a significant and loyal fan base.
The result is an album that hops comfortably and convincingly from the bubble-gum flightiness of "Martinis On The Roof" to the alternatingly sweet and spiky irony of "The Popular Music".
This is an album that could tear up the airwaves this summer, but with characteristic reservation, McCaughan indicates that he's not holding his breath.

Touring in support of his newly released fourth album, Around the Margins, Nashville-based Hoekstra was the visiting out-of-towner at last Saturday's singer-songwriter showcase on the downstairs stage at Valentine's.
He was accompanied by baritone guitarist Pat Meusel (who filled in the all-important lower register usually occupied by a bass) and background vocalist Christy Emmer.
On his albums, Hoekstra allows reasonable and often inventive flourishes to add a layer of drama, mystery and good old-fashioned pop shine to his songs.

The Blues White Album (Telarc) features a stable of blues heavyweights paying homage to the 1968 Beatles masterpiece, largely written when the Fab Four were in India mediating with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The other album, Your Basic Dave Van Ronk, is a 1981 solo effort that explores Van Ronks’s deep songbag of jazz, folk, blues and ragtime.
Their virtuosity and varied repertoire has won high praise from critics and also gigs at venues like NPR's "A Prairie Home Companion." Trio Voronezh plays with such charm and skill you’ll be tempted to keep this one for yourself.

About 'Babylon.' New acoustic music from soul rock singer songwriter Bryan Thomas.
Most of the songs on the album were written in early 2003, in the weeks before and after the launch of the Iraq War.
Thomas and his wife were awaiting the birth of their first child at the time, which intensified and complicated the songwriter's emotional response to front page headlines and images on the TV news.
That record - Metroland Magazine's "Album of the Year" in 2002 - was recorded over the course of a year in Thomas' bedroom studio with big beats, overdriven guitars and layered vocals.

A: In recent years many bands re-released their old albums as "remastered CDs." Technically this means that the old master tapes from which the original vinyl was produced are remixed using new digital sound recording technology.
But comparing the newer albums (which were already recorded digitally, like Brothers In Arms, On Every Street and On the Night) with the ‘originals,’ shows that there isn’t much difference.

Thompson is generally credited as one of the inventors of English-folk rock, with a career that began with the band Fairport Convention (whose album Liege and Lief arguably launched the genre) and has continued through a half-dozen albums with his then-wife Linda Thompson and over a dozen solo recordings and side-projects.
The album was produced by Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, the co-producers of Beck's 1994 album, Mellow Gold, and last year's Elliott Smith album, XO.
The album has all of Thompson's trademarks: songs about quirky and colorful characters from the wrong side of the tracks; tales of love gone bad told with wry, dark humor; intelligent lyrics; and his own absolutely unique brand of virtuoso electric and acoustic guitar.

George Graham Reviews Mark Knopfler's "Sailing to Philadelphia"
After a series of these side projects, four years ago Knopfler released Golden Heart, his full first solo album, which was a outstanding effort that combined the spaciousness of the latter-day Dire Straits with Knopfler's wide-ranging musical interests, reflected by the album having been recorded in Dublin, Nashville and Los Angeles.
While not as geographically and stylistically diverse as Knopfler's last album, the new production's use of guest vocalists adds an interesting new facet, and working with a regular band adds a degree of musical unity to the album of song that are otherwise fairly unrelated lyrically.
It comes together impressively in an album that is both a pleasure to listen to, and also fascinating and deep.

Jennifer Tefft - Metroland 2000   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Although Tefft is sometimes a little too serious for her own good, she never lets her downbeat subject matter get in the way of a good rock groove.
With its blend of sliding acoustic guitar figures, alternately airy and crunchy electric guitar parts and chirping sci-fi keyboard notes, "My Own" has the album's most effective compromise between loudness and meticulous details; during the song's charging chorus, Tefft sings over several layered harmony vocals, creating an intoxicating whirl of voices, guitars and effects.
The singer displays the gentler side of her persona in the bluesy "Fly Away," the Pink Floyd-flavored "Apology" and the album's lush closer, "Beyond This," but even these tracks have the balls-out fervor that has earned Tefft her club circuit cred.
