According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a metrological instrument comprising the measuring unit and a user-interface unit, the measuring unit and the user-interface unit being separable and being arranged to communicate with one another remotely without any physical connection therebetween, at least when the units are separated.
In a metrological instrument embodying invention, the ability to communicate remotely, that is without physical connection, to a user interface allows the measurement unit to be placed in location that would be difficult to access if the measurement unit was permanently connected to the user interface.
The operation of the metrological instrument according to the present invention will now be described with reference to Figure 2 which shows the main elements of the circuitry of the control unit 6 and the tracking unit 12.

 Sumerian numeration
That is, to represent three units of grain by a symbol for 'three' followed by a symbol for 'grain-unit' in the same way that we would write 3 sheep or 3 cows or, more generally, 3 liters or 3 kilometers.
Whereas we use the same number signs, regardless of their metrological meaning (the '3' for sheep is the same sign as the '3' for kilometers or jars of oil), the Sumerians used a wide variety of different symbols.
Any metrological system contains a number of different-sized units with fixed conversion factors between them, so that, for example, there are 12 inches in a foot and three feet in a yard, and so on.

 CDLJ 2003:5
In order to identify metrological systems, it is first necessary to throw light on numerical signs which may correspond to metrological units, and then to reconstruct, if possible, the relations between these units.
These indications are best represented in metrological diagrams, the principle of which has been established by J. Friberg[25]; sign identifiers and orientation follow the standards established in ATU 2, 335-345.
Metrological systems at Ur are also distinct from those of the previous periods.

However it has to be considered that meeting metrological requirements is not the primary goal of laboratory medicine, it is only a tool to serve the primary goal, which is generating useful and reliable information for medical decision-making.
Medical and metrological traceability The consistency of the analytical process is an essential element of the medical traceability.
Establishing metrological traceability of routine measurement procedures to analytical reference systems It is an important goal in laboratory medicine to achieve comparability of results among different routine measurement procedures so that the results may become interchangeable over time and space.

Chemistry International -- Newsmagazine for IUPAC
For differential and rational properties, the concept “metrological unit” is essential to their measurement and expression of unitary quantity values, although the term for a unit does not indicate the kind-of-quantity.
Currently, this is the “International System of Units,” SI, formed from specific concepts of “base metrological unit” (seven in all) and “coherent derived metrological unit” (a large number), with multiples and submultiples obtained by SI prefixes; these concepts are defined as well as “off-system metrological unit” and “in-system metrological unit”.
As is the case for metrological unit, a metrological dimension does not identify a unique corresponding unitary kind-of-quantity.

The metrological advances led to opportunities and surprises, such as the non-monotonic dendrochronological calibration curve and the "bomb effect," that gave rise to new multidisciplinary areas of application, ranging from archaeology and anthropology to cosmic ray physics to oceanography to apportionment of anthropogenic pollutants to the reconstruction of environmental history.
More specifically, it examines the metrological revolutions, or at least evolutionary milestones that have marked the history of radiocarbon dating, since its inception some 50 years ago, to the present.
Following the discovery of this 5730 year (half-life) radionuclide in laboratory experiments by Ruben and Kamen, it became clear to W. Libby that [.sup.14]C should exist in nature, and that it could serve as a quantitative means for dating artifacts and events marking the history of civilization.

First, to obtain international acceptance of a thermodynamically-based, metrologically sound protocol for pH measurements; and second, to assess the degree of agreement which is attained in interlaboratory measurements of primary pH standards at the highest metrological level.
Quantitative information on horizontal traceability at the highest metrological level [the pH(PS) standards] is essential to international acceptance of the NIST protocol for pH metrology.
The revised IUPAC protocol for pH, currently under development, incorporates the metrological principles of traceability, primary and secondary measurements, and treatment of uncertainties.

Although the science of metrology has evolved during the last three decades, the basic principle of harmonizing results using recognized reference materials and methods is still understood as a necessary one.
The responsibility of the manufacturer for metrological traceability shall begin at the assigned value for a product calibrator and end at the secondary calibrator or secondary reference measurement procedure as the case may be and if such exist.
Metrological traceability of a value assigned to a trueness control material shall utilize the calibration hierarchy shown as appropriate, substituting in i) with manufacturer’s product trueness control material.
