In the early 1970s, the late Robert Westerfield moved to Metropolis from Owensboro, Ky. and was surprised to find that the town did not have any formal association with Superman, since everyone knows that the Man of Steel is from Metropolis Westerfield soon became the creative drive behind the movement to officially adopt Superman.
Metropolis the real one was officially declared the Hometown of Superman by the Illinois House in1972.
Metropolis was then inundated with telephone calls from people wanting to know what was going on with Superman, and the idea for the annual Superman Celebration was born.
