Stoke Newington has been settled for hundreds of years, with possible Saxon settlements in the area near River Lea.
Most famously, the "Stoke Newington 8" were arrested on 20 August 1971 at 359 Amhurst Road for suspected involvement in The Angry Brigade bombings.

The Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington was a metropolitan borough in the County of London between 1899 and 1965 when it became part of the London Borough of Hackney.
It included the western part of the district of Stoke Newington (most was in the metropolitan borough of Hackney) and Manor House, and bordered the metropolitan boroughs of Islington and Hackney, as well as Middlesex to the north.
Rather a plain building (perhaps reflecting local nonconformist traditions) compared with those of nearby boroughs like Shoreditch, it is no longer even used as Hackney council offices, and its future is in some doubt.

The present boroughs came into existence on April 1, 1965 with the creation of the Greater London Council (GLC).
They had wider authority than the inner London metropolitan boroughs and neighbouring municipal boroughs which they mostly replaced, but less power than the three county boroughs of Croydon, West Ham and East Ham which ceased to exist at the same time.
The London boroughs became in effect unitary authorities (combining both county and borough functions, much like the former county boroughs) at the GLC's abolition on April 1, 1986.
