Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai - Dn.I) Ltd formerly known as Pallavan Transport Corporation Ltd was established on 1.1.1972 with a fleet strength of 1029 buses.
Pallavan Transport Corporation was renamed as Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai Division –1) Limited, Dr. Ambedkar Transport Corporation was re-named as Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai Division-II) Ltd., on 01.07.97.
The fleet strength of the Corporation as on 31.03.2003 was 2773 with 23 depots, a body building unit at Chrompet, a ticket printing press at K.K Nagar and Reconditioning Unit at Pattulos Road.

 AGREEMENT BETWEEN BANGALORE METROPOLITAN TRANSPORT CORPORATION AND SHRI
Whereas the BMTC is a State Transport Undertaking created under Section-3 of the Road Transport Corporation Act 1950 with exclusive power and authority to ply and operate passenger transport buses in Urban and Sub-Urban routes of Bangalore Metropolitan area and such other areas as per the approved schemes.
In the event of the Corporation not assigning the minimum distance of 250 kilometers per day, the Corporation shall pay the owner the hire charges as though the owner had operated the bus for 250 kilometers on that day and the pay structure shall accord to the slab for 250 to 254 kilometers.
The Corporation shall be at liberty to fix and change the route and the timings for the operation of the Bus according to its discretion.

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has identified about 490 km of principal transit routes within the city and surrounding areas to form part of an integrated inter-modal mass transit network.
The MTC has invited bids from those who are experienced in commercially operating a rail network for 50 km or a monorail system for 15 km, for the last five years and proven track record of raising both debt and equity, in the domestic and foreign markets.
The corporation will be willing to sign a concession agreement with the successful bidder, be it an individual company or a consortium that meets the bid conditions, for 40 years, including the construction period.

The Centre has told States to introduce electric buses for public transport in an effort to reduce air and noise pollution in all the major cities of the country.
The State is expected to be first in the country to have electric trolley buses for public transport and, according to the Government plan, the new buses will cover a 65-km route length encompassing all the arterial roads in Mysore.
