This district was merged from 1820 till 1861 with the district Elberfeld, which then became a city in its own right, now it's part of Wuppertal.

Mettmann is a North-Rhine-Westphalian (Germany) city and the seat of the District of Mettmann.
In 1363, Mettmann was one of eight administrative cities in the "Bergisches Land." Later the city became a free city by the hand of "Diplomat am Hof des Herzogs von Kleve" and was allowed to build a wall and choose a mayor.
In 1806, Mettmann became French and the mayor was known as "Monsieur le Maire." Mettman was French for about 10 years and became part of Prussia due to the Vienna Congress.

The Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis is a district in the middle of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
The district was created originally in 1929 by merging the former districts Schwelm and those parts not integrated into the district-free cities Hagen and Bochum of the districts Hattingen and Hagen.
In 1970 and 1975 it was modified a bit during the reorganization of the districts in North Rhine-Westphalia, most notably was the inclusion of the previously district-free city Witten.

It is bounded by (from the north and clockwise) the district-free cities of Bochum, Dortmund and Hagen, the districts of Märkischer Kreis and Oberbergischer Kreis, the city of Wuppertal, the district of Mettmann and the city of Essen.
The district was created in 1929 by merging the former district of Schwelm with parts of the districts of Hattingen and Hagen.
