  ORDER METZGERIALES
Even the thallose members of the Jungermanniales are decidedly different from he metzgeriales and appear to represent specialization within the Jungermannialian line rather than the progenitor to the Metzgeriales
Metzgeriales and Jungermanniales differ in both ecology and distribution.
A number of features are shared with the Calobryakes: anacrogynous, large chromosomes, large sex chromosomes, two nucleolate in haploid.

Marchantiophyta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The earliest fossils believed to be liverworts are compression fossils of Pallaviciniites from the Upper Devonian of New York.
The Jungermanniopsida includes primarily the two orders Metzgeriales (simple thalloids) and Jungermanniales (leafy liverworts), as well as a smaller order Haplomitriales.
The Marchantiopsida includes primarily the orders Marchantiales (complex-thallus liverworts) and Sphaerocarpales (bottle hepatics), as well as the problematic genus Monoclea, which is sometimes placed in its own order Monocleales.

Abstract 4118 from Intl. Bot. Congress 1999   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Complete 18S rDNA sequence data of 65 bryophyte species, representatives of all the classes, were used to infer a molecular phylogeny of bryophytes.
The results reveal that the liverworts have to be divided into two separate classes, the Marchantiopsida, including Marchantiales and Sphaerocarpales, completely separated from the Jungermanniopsida, including the Metzgeriales and Jungermanniales.
The Jungermanniopsida form together with the Bryopsida a sister clade to all Marchantiopsida, a result which was obtained with bootstrap values between 97 and 100% in all phylogenetic constructions, irrespective of the method used.

Later, because there is no evolutionary advantage to the possession of lamellae, the wings flattened up developing the thallose morphology observed in Sewardiella.
Schuster (1984, 1992) conceptualized his order Metzgeriales as a group with few genera placed within 7-8 suborders with significant discontinuities, suggesting ancient diversification and massive extinction.
Derived characters of this group are: plants are dorsiventral, mainly with apical cells with 2 cutting faces; ventral merophytes are lacking or vestigial; rhizoids present and scattered; dimorphic branching; leaves longitudinally inserted; archegonia aggregated in gynoecia (Schuster 1984).

Experiments reveal that glomalean fungi forming typical VA mycorrhizas with a higher plant (Plantago lanceolata) can colonise a thalloid liverwort (Pellia fabroniana) producing arbuscules and vesicles in the thallus.
Some members of the Jungermanniales and Metzgeriales form associations with basidiomycetous fungi, which produce intracellular hyphal coils similar to the pelotons seen in orchid mycorrhizas.
The fungal associates of the autotrophic Aneura pinguis and its heterotrophic relative Cryptothallus mirabilis have been isolated.

The thallous liverworts are a diverse group of nonleafy Hepatophyta.
They can be found on moist, shaded stream banks, etc. One order, the Marchantiales has a rather well differentiated thallus, whereas the order Metzgeriales contains organisms that are rather simple by comparison.
This is a structurally simple group of thalloid liverworts.
