CROSS CHANNEL ATTACK excerpt - Allied victory on D-Day
Elements of the 352d Division, in fact, were still on the Meuvaines ridge after midday.
The failure of the Germans to exploit the weakness of [U.S.] V Corps was the result quite simply of their own greater weakness.
General Kraiss concluded (apparently for the first time) that the Allies were planning a two-pronged attack on Bayeux from bridgeheads at St. Laurent and Meuvaines.

VICTORY IN THE WEST Gold beach excerpt
After capturing a machine-gun post at Meuvaines they by-passed le Hamel and advanced westwards towards Buhot and an enemy position, at Puits d'Herode, which covered Arromanches and the nearby shores from the south.
Though troops on the beach east of les Roquettes were less exposed to fire from le Hamel the breaching teams were still having casualties in clearing two exits to the coast road.
On the left of the 56th Brigade, the 151st had moved forward in two groups supported by the 90th Field Regiment, R.A. Starting from near Meuvaines the right-hand group, led by the 9th Durham Light Infantry, took roughly the line of the Crépon-Bayeux road.

The 916th's 1st Battalion held out for the better part of the day, but when the 441st Ost Battalion collapsed, Bayeux was as good as lost.
The 352nd's only battalion in the British zone retained the fortified Meuvaines ridge east of Arromanches until after midday.
By noon the U.S. 1st Division had cleared the Germans from the beaches and bluffs in its area, but in the 29th Division's area fire was still coming from German slit trenches and bunkers that had been bypassed or otherwise overlooked by the advancing troops.

The air was full of allied aircraft, but I only saw one German aircraft in daylight on D-Day, a fighter bomber, Focke-Wolf 190, which dropped a couple of bombs on the beach, but as soon as it was dark the German bombers came.
Having got ashore, we, (the sector HQ) were held at up at Graye-Sur-Mer for the night, as the Germans were holding out in a wood nearby, barring the way to our setting-up point at Meuvaines.

Meanwhile, B Company, the other 1 Dorset assault company, had elected to take a 'short cut' across the Marsh to their objective at the les Roquettes farm.
This route inland took them over an hour-and-a-half to complete, all the while enduring enemy machine gun and mortar fire from the Meuvaines Ridge, as well as the sucking mud of the marsh.
This explains why the Germans felt justified in holding the beach in front of the marsh so lightly.

Thanks to the efforts of the 4th/7th RDGs DD Tanks (Sherman Tanks fitted with waterproof skirts), the 5th East Yorks, the 6th Green Howards and the 1st Dorsets, most of the enemy resistance had been nullified, enabling the 151st to move inland from their position towards Ver-sur-Mer and later Meuvaines.
The 151st ensured Ver-sur-Mer and Meuvaines were secure and under the command of Brigadier R.H Senior, moved off towards Bayeaux.
