Mevagissey, an historic fishing village takes its name from two saints, St Meva and St Issey (St Meva hag St Issey), and is picturesque with its narrow streets, unique double harbour and numerous restaurants and pubs serving wonderful local produce, fish and meat at remarkable value.
Charlestown, Gorran Haven, Portloe, and Mevagissey have all been used as film sets for cinema or TV productions, and the scenery is some of the most dramatic, picturesque and easily accessible in the country.
Mevagissey celebrates Feast Week at the end of June and there are carnivals, dances, musical performances, and fireworks to celebrate the pilchard harvest (regrettably the pilchards are no longer harvested - EC rules).

MEVAGISSEY, in the deanery and in the east division of the hundred of Powder, anciently called Lamorrack or Lavorack, lies on the western side of St. Austell bay, six miles east-south-east from Grampound, the same distance east from Tregony, and nearly south from St. Austell.
The manor of Trelevan, which includes a great part of the town of Mevagissey, belonged for several generations to the family of Trewolla of Trewolla in St. Gorran, and was by them sold, in or about the year 1667, to Walter Vincent, Esq.
The manor and barton of Carhayes belonged at an early period to the Arundells, and passed, with an heiress of that family, to the Trevanions, who had their original seat at Trevanion, in this parish: there is still a park at the last-mentioned place, although there are no remains of the ancient mansion.

mevagissey is so unique, thankgoodness there are still local people who were born and raised there,and are able to inform 'The Emetts' of how life was years ago.
Mevagissey was a little less colouful in those days, plain granite buildings etc., but since the "emetts" have taken over there is more of a mediteranean look.

Named "Endeavour", she was launched from Mevagissey harbour on the evening of Saturday 16th April 1988 by former Cornwall and England International Rugby player, Richard Sharp of the National Sports Council.
In 1996, due to increased difficulties of launching and storage at Mevagissey, a decision was taken to move their permanent base to Pentewan Sands, just around the coast, for boat storage, training base and holding racing events.
They also continue to be associated with the Mevagissey community through various fundraising events and hosting the Portmellon Watersports event on a yearly basis each in August, where swimming races are held for children, along with gig racing demonstrations and fireworks.
