It is no coincidence that Mew is the new Danish shooting star - their grand pop music is nothing less than divine.
Mew started out as a dreamy, noisy rock band, something like My Bloody Valentine, but became a major indie hit because of their sense of airy pop.
Mew’s musical universe is still dreamy but now they have incorporated the grandiose sound into their music.

Mew and my battle against the term "prog"
Unless you're a 80's metal band (I'm talking to you Metal Skool), every songwriter is looking to add something to the musical universe, and therefore wants to be progressive.
Mew's sound is more subtle and pleasant (this is coming from a huge Mars Volta fan, so don't confuse pleasant for an always positive term).

Mew - completed by drummer Silas Graae - first met in the seventh grade, charged with making a film for a school project about the end of the world: their film consisted of them introducing the film over and over again in slow motion.
No sooner did it get an initial limited release in Sweden, however, than they were snapped up by Sony for a world-wide deal and decided to pull the new record and re-record the best of their catalogue for an international audience.
The result was Frengers, a tenfold leap in sales figures and suddenly Mew found themselves thrust into the 'big time' of one-bedroom London squat-holes and lengthy Transit van tours of the M6.

Mew were formed in Copenhagen in 1995 and released their debut album, "Triumph For A Man", in 1997.

Here, Mew embark on a series of large and ambitious projects, and the pop melodies on the band's latest cut are made imposing and grand, with an almost symphonic rock idiom.

I have a feeling that we’re a band that appeals to other bands which is a good thing at this stage in our career, when we’re so dependent on being invited on tour by other bands.
There are so many bands in the UK and I suppose some people in England are kind of patriotic when it comes to their music.
Few bands have the patience to construct songs as carefully as this and it may well be the background in film that aids this.

Straight off their first US tour (and on the eve of another set of dates in the states this fall) we got to put some questions to singer/guitarist Jonas Bjerre about the history of the band and what may be coming up on the horizon.
This was when the band had just started out and we were beginning to get a little buzz going in the underground.

Mew: And the Glass Handed Kites - PopMatters Music Review
We have all the hallmarks of a good prog record here: the rhythms are often reliant on non-traditional time signatures, songs fade in and out or run together instead of stopping and starting, and even the cover art seems ludicrously over-the-top in its inherent cheesiness.
In the hands of a less pop-minded band, these tunes would probably be mostly innocuous, but when Jonas Bjerre's angelic voice breaks from the intricate guitar lines, you're left with glorious pop music.
What often saves this record from the tedium that plagues many prog bands is the length of the songs.

 Seattlest: Mew > Kasabian
The best word we've heard to describe Danish band Mew is "unabashed." This trait is a good thing---we'd much rather hear a band play shoegazey post-prog rock earnestly than with their tongue firmly in cheek.
Mew knows this all too well, and they kicked off their opening set at Neumo's last night with "The Zookeeper's Boy," the best track off of their fourth album And the Glass Handed Kites.
Apparently, Mew had different things in mind, as their performance of the song was paired with projected visuals of dolls and stuffed animals playing string instruments.
