I was wondering what the big differences were between the Mexican made and the American made one.
I just picked up a Mexican Tele at Thanksgiving, and frankly, I thought it was nicer (except for the tonewood) than the American guitars in the store.
I wouldn't ever knock a Mexican Strat, but I wouldn't generally use "good action" as a reason to hold an electric guitar in high esteem.

IMO, the ash sounds the nicest generally, and the alder and poplar are quite light weight.
The reality is that on the mexican you'll get a bit more endgrain coming out at you.
I simply checked my Mexican very thoroughly in this category while she was still under bright lights at the store and I picked a winner.

It takes a while, but you can usually find a Mexican Strat that is really nice, they are made on most of the same machines as the Americans anyway.
Go to a store and play an American, play a Mexican, play a Korean, etc. I've played some really awesome (feeling) mexican fenders and turned right around and picked up an American that felt like the frets had not even been smoothed down on the edges.
The craftmanship of the Mexican Strat MAY be slightly less quality than the American Strat, but the only real major difference (ever since the two factories have moved closer together and share materials) is the

There are loads of differences between American and Mexican Fenders, but it varies depending on the specific model.
I've a Mexican Standard Tele, and it has a poplar body, which they all used to have (except for maybe the sunburst model, which possibly had an alder body).
I have a Mexican '50s Strat as well, which is sunburst has an alder body (I'm not sure about now, but the Mexican Classic Strats from even just a couple of years ago, used poplar bodies if they had a solid-colour finish).
