Mexicantown is a small-scale representation of the issues confronting the whole of Detroit.
Although the exact geographical extents of the Mexicantown were still debated from various sources, for the purpose of this design studio these were fixed from 16th Street (just off the railroad) to 24th Street across Interstate-75 in east-west direction.
Mexicantown has had its inherent problems dated years ago when Interstate -75 was designed by bifurcating the community into two halves.

For Susy Villarreal-Garza, a lifelong Mexicantown resident whose family has run Tamaleria Nuevo Leon since 1957, Dia de los Muertos is a chance to shatter misconceptions about the neighborhood to outsiders who don’t always know how vibrant and alive the area is. “Once you come in here, you are like, ‘it’s great,’” she says.
And Mexicantown Bakery will sell at least 2,000 loaves of pan de muertos when all is said and done, and the numbers grow every year, Ramirez says.

The City of Detroit, for instance, has agreed to act as the guarantor for a $7.8-million loan for the new $15-million Mercado welcome centre planned for the foot of the bridge plaza, has provided a $1-million grant for streetscaping and has pledged $750,000 for staffing costs to groups working on community revitalization.

While there are many different ethnic communities in metro Detroit, the COC decided to concentrate its initial outreach efforts on those with the largest populations: African American; Arab American and Chaldean; and Latino/Hispanic.

It is one of the best communitys in Detroit when it comes to business investment and home investment and is quite family orientated.
The only problem is that part of the neighborhood is cut off from the downtown area on Bagley due to the Fisher freeway(I-75).

Mexican pride is expected to get a boost on Cinco De Mayo next year at the premier of A Journey to Mexico, a documentary that will chronicle the experiences of thousands of people who immigrated to Detroit from two towns in Mexico.
Rodriguez said that while many people were moving out of Detroit, the city's Mexicantown area grew as about two thousand people immigrated here seasonally from Jesus Maria and St. Ignacio in central Mexico.
