System of a Down - Mezmerize CD Review
What would have made Mezmerize a truly great album would have been if the band had taken more risks in terms of arrangements and the epic scope of the songs.
No song on Mezmerize has any more than about four parts (verse, chorus, bridge, solo) and most of them are in the three-minute range, so the lifespan of the disc in my player ended up being shorter than it should have by about 10 listens.
Mezmerize did just that for five or six spins, but was so catchy and hook-laden that I had the whole album figured out in a few days.

System of a Down: Mezmerize - A Hollywood Jesus Music Review
As far are their subversive-ness, the lyrical content on Mezmerize is a solid stream of anti-war, anti-corporate and anti-celebrity sentiment.
Clocking in at a mere 38 minutes, the reason given is that this release is one-half of a two CD set--with part 2, Hypnotize, expected in late fall 2005.
But despite this sense that Mezmerize gives of giving in to the inevitable and pointless destruction of everything, there is still something left.

System Of A Down: Mezmerize (2005): Reviews
Mezmerize works as a synopsis of the most effective weapons in the band’s arsenal.
Mezmerize's strongest moments are when the band drops the eccentricities and just rocks out.
At its reckless best, which is a lot, Mezmerize is thrilling confrontation, a graphic reflection of a nation tearing itself apart in anger, fear and guilt.

For as good as "Mezmerize" is, I feel a much bigger and grander album is on the way.
'Mezmerize' is the first disc in the 2005 SOAD masterpiece, and could easily be tagged as their best.
I personaly look at 'Mezmerize' and 'Hypnotize' together as one album because they were recorded at the same time and I am thoroughly impressed.

The first instalment of a projected two-album set, Mezmerize sees System Of A Down, an American band of mostly Armenian heritage, further distilling their unique formula of thrash metal, socio-political rage, and Eastern European vocal melody into ever-more fiendishly complicated and white-knuckle exhilarating forms.
I saw SOAD on their Mezmerize tour in June 2005, and to be honest, I can't imagine a better display.
There was a lot of hysteria surronding "Mezmerize" before its release, would it be able to match or even topple the sucess of multi-platnium "Toxicity" and keep up the maamoth sales that it inticed.

The band is back with the short and sweet Mezmerize, the first of two new albums that SOAD will release this year.
And while Mezmerize is no new rock classic, it is a surprisingly catchy album and quite an enjoyable listen.
Mezmerize starts off with the short one minute intro song “Soldier Side/Intro.” This song is a complete waste of time and really isn’t worth listening to more than once or twice.

The Rock Radio: System Of A Down: Mezmerize
System Of A Down's third album, "Mezmerize", encapsulates the band's 10 year career and does not fail to deliver.
Clever lyrics which manage to be hysterical, bizarre and humorous at the same time, fresh and rebellious sound reminiscent of the Sex Pistols and breathtakingly powerful riffs reminiscent of Metallica in their early glorious days.
"Mezmerize" is a heavy rock album the way it should be.

Mezmerize toys around with the same sense of daring, and a similarly disaffected view of Americana and consumerism, but one-ups Toxicity in pop hooks and sheer nonsense factor.
Still, Malakian and Tankian sharing vocals is exciting; it makes Mezmerize feel that much more collaborative, and the two voices winding around the fringes of arrangements before converging in hair-raising harmonies add droves of color to songs that a single vocalist couldn't do much with.
More importantly, Mezmerize would be the record of the year thus far, if hip-hop hadn't stolen its considerable thunder with gorgeous albums from Edan and Common.

Rolling Stone : Mezmerize : Review
In its breakneck-suite song construction and relentless, accusatory vigor, Mezmerize instead rants and rips like a bizarre, gripping compression of the Mars Volta's attention-deficit disorder on Frances the Mute and the operatic contempt of the Mothers of Invention's 1968 hippie-culture broadside We're Only in It for the Money.
Considering the lethal, obsessive precision of the music on Mezmerize -- Malakian was so determined to get it right that he also played bass on all but three songs -- he and Tankian are often blunt and crude in their mockery, as if they're starting to run out of faith in elevated heavy-rock discourse.
In fact, Mezmerize closes with the nearest thing in System's playbook to sympathy: "Lost in Hollywood," a requiem for a runaway with rainy-gray-treble guitars and gilded with monastic-prayer harmonies.

Mezmerize - System of a Down - Music Reviews
Prerelease, the band described Mezmerize as being the first part -- the first side -- of what's essentially a double album.
Their volatile mix of righteousness, wordiness, odd meters, and thrash has balanced System's activism since their self-titled debut, making them "unique heavy music" over the much more problematic "unique, heavily political music." And Mezmerize doesn't fail to be unique.

System of a Down's Mezmerize is one of those benchmark albums in which a very promising band blossoms fully.
Unlike their previous efforts which had a tendency to lose their greater components in a sea of aimlessness, Mezmerize is a front-to-back winner.
This is the first half of two albums due in 2005 for the band (the other, Hypnotize, is due in the fall) and it is dubbed the "Soldier Side." Thankfully, a brief examination of the song titles reveal that SOAD do not devote the entirety to the current quagmire in Iraq.

In addition to writing more than half of the lyrics for both Mezmerize and Hypnotize, he played acoustic guitars, pianos and synths on the new album, as well as handling the string arrangements, doing most of it in his well-appointed home studio.

System of a Down : Mezmerize - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
All of the System albums are a bit different in their own way, sure Mezmerize is more different than the rest but i think that shows the band's talent, they can produce such different sounds all of which are, in my opinion, the best music this world has!
I actually felt insulted when I first heard it because their marketing scheme to release this album as it's own (running time 36mins) when at least six of the ten (real) songs are annoying garbage.
If I had to mark down its mistakes, it would have to be the quantity of this album, but then again, there's "Hypnotize" coming in a few months, so that fills the double-bit.

The record industry is probably going to use this as another example of how people steal albums and that P2P file sharing using bit torrent etc. should be outlawed.
But I think that this spreading like wildfire is excellent free advertizing for System of a Down, and their new CD Mezmerize.
Moreover, I have the idea that Mezmerize will do better than System of a Down's previous albums Self titled, Toxicity, and (what's in a name) Steal this album!

Parents need to know that MEZMERIZE contains four-letter words and violent imagery, sometimes in the context of socio-political commentary and sometimes not.
Their fourth album, MEZMERIZE, is generously (though not as generously as on previous CDs) laced with four-letter-words, explicit sexuality, violent imagery, radical political commentary, drug and STD references -- all presented in the context of absurdist poetry and excellent (some might even say visionary) instrumental arrangements.
In a change of pace from their previous work, guitarist Daron Malakian shares more of the songwriting and lead vocal spotlight with keyboardist Serj Tankian.

Mezmerize by System Of A Down CD
System of a Down, however, developed a loyal fanbase with the opposite approach--the group mixes genres so freely that describing what their music sounds like is nearly impossible.
Sure, SOAD is, at its core, a metal band, but on MEZMERIZE's first two songs alone, vocalist/guitarist/mastermind Daron Malakian and crew zigzag their way though Beach Boys-like stacked vocal harmonies, Anthrax-esque hardcore thrash, Cameo-style funk, and prog rock of a CARESS OF STEEL-era Rush variety.
Even sharper, tighter, and more ambitious than System of a Down's previous albums, MEZMERIZE makes for a consistently surprising listen.

There is much to like in Mezmerize yet almost an equal amount that irritates.
In this reviewer's humble opinion, System Of A Down might wish to reflect that being Armenian, having silly beards, blending outrageous pop with stomping metal and shoving two fingers up at the US Government is probably enough to mark them out as "different" without them actually trying to be quirky.

SOAD set the experimentation bar plenty high with Toxicity, but manage to clear it with regularity here, particularly on the dizzyingly layered "This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm in This Song" and the purposefully ugly "Violent Pornography," which jerks along on waves of anguished guitar contortions.
Packing 11 songs into 36 minutes, Mezmerize doesn't offer much in the way of a breather, but it's a stimulating and effective way to build up listening stamina.
