Mezquita's 'Recuerdos de mi Tierra' is, IMHO, the definite masterpiece of Flamenco oriented prog, and most certainly, one of the highlights of Spanish prog in general.
From the beautiful city of Córdoba, Mezquita managed to elaborate a prog style firmly rooted in the Flamenco traditions, and watered by the influential flows of 73-75 Yes (with less meandering), the melodic side of KC, the fire of Rush, and some hints to classic hard rock.

The Mezquita has served as a cathedral since 1236, but its origins as a mosque are clear.
Under Abd ar-Rahman II (822-52), the Mezquita held an original copy of the Koran and a bone from the arm of the prophet Mohammed and became a Muslim pilgrimage site second only to Mecca in importance.
After the Reconquest, the Christians left the Mezquita largely undisturbed, dedicating it to the Virgin Mary and using it as a place of Christian worship.

Summing up the Mezquita? On Spanish mosques and cathedrals   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Many people are taken aback when trying to quickly absorb such a heady mix such as the Mezquita, which is like trying to see the Louvre in a hurry.
In the Louvre he's left with "lots of paintings" and in the Mezquita it's "a forest of columns and arches marred by an unspectacular cathedral." These hasty generalizations don't even begin to describe either the Louvre or the Cordoba Cathedral, but they do provide easy labels for tourists with little time for serious art history.
But for whatever reason, he pronounced the words which were to forever mar the image of the Cathedral and the Mosque of Cordoba: the cathedral was commonplace, whereas the mosque had been unique.
