Topic: Mezzanine (album)

In the News (Sat 25 May 13)

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Mezzanine
And Mezzanine is beginning to sound like one of the only albums to come out this year that could be a potential classic.
The claustrophobic feel of the album, which fits the title of the album to a 'T' is hard to explain.
Like OK Computer last year, Mezzanine has the feel of an album that could not only stand the time as a great piece of work, but as a work that is actually going to influence other musicians.

Amazon.co.uk: Mezzanine: Limited Edition: Music: Massive Attack
By the release of 1998's Mezzanine, critics were suddenly of the understanding that Massive Attack were one of the most important bands in the world.
With Mezzanine, however, the party had ended; revisiting the murky soundscapes so favoured by former partner and fellow Bristolian Tricky, the comeback single "Rising Son" muttering edgily about "cheap beer filled with crocodile tears", over the deepest bass.
The whole album, is must be said is rather an introspective one, to be most appreciated whilst alone, and will not appeal to everyone.

Massive Attack - Mezzanine Review - sputnikmusic
Mezzanine is considered by many to be the ultimate trip hop album, defining the genre and being a must have for any fan of music anywhere.
To many critics, this is the album that almost single-handedly made trip hop a force to be reckoned with in the late 90's.
Therefore this album is a puzzlement for me. From that aforementioned amount of praise, upon purchasing this album, I was expecting something incredible and unheard of, and Mezzanine didn't deliver.

Review: Increasingly ignored amidst the exploding trip-hop scene, Massive Attack finally returned in 1998 with Mezzanine, a record immediately announcing not only that the group was back, but that they'd recorded a set of songs just as singular and revelatory as on their debut, almost a decade back.
Obviously, the rest of the album can't compete, but there's certainly no sign of the side-two slump heard on Protection, as both Andy and Fraser return for excellent, mid-tempo tracks ("Man Next Door" and "Black Milk," respectively).

Treble : Album Review : Liz Durrett - The Mezzanine
Thankfully only waiting one more year to put out another album, we are treated to the divine sounds of The Mezzanine, an album so full of smoldering and pensive beauty that one aches to hear it.
Nicholson Baker's first novel, which shares a title with this album, details the minutiae of everyday life in an office during one lunch hour as the mind adds digression upon digression as he ruminates about paperclips, escalators, cigarette wrappers and a horde of other objects and thoughts.
The album is a hazy photograph of the South, as we hear an example of as Durrett plays a tinny piano that resides in Chesnutt's hall in the haunting instrumental piece "Silent Partner." Another part of that snapshot is "Creepyaskudzu," its title a reference to the vine that takes over everything on which it grows.

However, as is usually the case with most of their albums, they borrowed singers from other bands to contribute with some vocals.
All that is left by the song's end are the lone sounds of the synthesizers, which the band used to such great effect throughout this album and these lone sounds end a phenomenal album.
The album is dark and depressing and many people will dislike the album because of its dark nature.

The only reason Mezzanine hung together as an album was because the two of us drove it through, and there's a similar scenario to the new album 100th Window.

Most of my favourite albums, and the ones that I continually go back to, are the ones that took me a while to get into in the first place.

Massive Attack : A Collective Collected
Though the album's icy textures overlaid with the white noise of Angelo Bruschini's fuzz-toned guitar gained critical plaudits, Mezzanine - possibly purposefully - took the band away from the utility of upscale dinner parties.
Del Naja has since spoken of the band's need to highlight (or is that lowlight?) the melancholic aspect of popular song, but new tracks like the slightly-mannered dislocation of Inertia Creeps spoke of something beyond the pleasurable frisson of sadness that has been part of the palette of pop since Cole Porter and beyond.
Mezzanine's surprise turn came in the form of Cocteau Twin Liz Fraser, who's siren-song rubber-stamped 4AD's alternative pathway to 80's pop.

Their I 991 debut album Blue Lines blended hip-hop, new wave, reggae, early house and techno as well as giving us the memorable single 'Unfinished Sympathy', The follow-up Protection, featuring Tracey Thorn and produced by Massive Attack and Nellee Hooper, was an equal success, cementing their position as a pioneering musical force.
"Mezzanine was a pretty sketchy album in terms of the way we worked," recalls Neil, "because the band, as reported a lot at that time, were not getting on.

MEZZANINE, the third album from the producer/DJ crew who, for all intents and purposes, created the genre of trip-hop, is thicker, less spacious and far more guitar-heavy than their previous efforts.
"angel" is excellent, and "risingson" is my joint favourite on the album alongside teardrop because the atmosphere the song produces by the bassline, strange sounds and creepy vocals of 3D and daddy-g - both perfect for this song and album.
the rest of the album is also amazing but i think you would like me to shut up so i will end now by saying that this album is a true classic and everyone should own it.

Through the past darkly - theage.com.au
Most of the tracks on Mezzanine remained in one key from start to finish and would be driven entirely by a single sonic idea, whether it was guitar or bass.
The album's title comes from Charles Jennings' cult book about electronic security, which explored the idea that no matter how secure a computer system appears to be, there is always a way in.
Releasing their landmark debut album, Blue Lines, in 1991, the collective aesthetic was in full swing with the album featuring guest turns from singers Shara Nelson and Horace Andy (along with Del Naja, the only common thread through Massive Attack's four albums), and a fledgling rapper, Tricky.

Husk was a good debut but Durrett was in her teen years during the recording process and the album is easily distinguishable as one written by a talented, yet inexperienced, young woman.
For her sophomore album, The Mezzanine, Durrett’s uncle and mentor Vic Chesnutt, returns as producer, the position he also held for Husk.
The Mezzanine may be to slow going for a mainstream audience, but it’s an album that showcases Durrett’s growth as an artist and person.
