  Mezzotint - LoveToKnow 1911
Mezzotint continued to be practised for a while on the Continent, but the successors of Sherwin in England so excelled in it that it early acquired abroad the title of "la maniere Anglaise," and has since become an exclusively British art.
Mezzotints were occasionally printed in colours, notably those engraved later after George Morland, the primary object being to conceal the worn-out condition of the plates.
In" pure mezzotint "the design is evolved from dark to light entirely by scraping away more or less of the previously laid" ground,"the original" burr "of which is left untouched in the extreme darks, and no acid, etching or line-work is used in it at all.

Mezzotint involves uniform burring with a curved, sawtoothed tool by cradling it back and forth until the surface of the plate presents an all-over, even grain.
In pure mezzotint, no line drawing is employed, the result being soft without the sharp lines of an etching.
Mezzotint was often used for the reproduction of paintings, particularly, in England, for landscapes and portraits.

 Mezzotint
Mezzotint is a printing process of the intaglio familiy, in which the surface of a metal plate is roughened evenly; the image is then brought out by smoothing the surface, creating the image by working from dark to light.
Plates can be mechanically roughened, but the classical way is to rub fine metal filings over the surface with a piece of glass; the finer the filings, the smaller the grain of the surface.
Mezzotint is known for the luxurious quality of its tones: first, because an evenly, finely roughened surface holds a lot of ink, allowing deep solid colors to be printed; secondly because the process of smoothing the texture with a burin allows fine gradations in tone to be developed.

The mezzotint process was first developed in the printmaking center of Amsterdam in the second quarter of the seventeenth century.
Mezzotints circulated widely, sold in a variety of sizes (including "royal," 24 x 19 in., "large," 18 x 24 in., "posture," 14 x 10 in., and "small," 6 x 4 in.) intended to fit standard-sized frames, and were offered in a range of prices calculated to suit every budget.
Some mezzotints, such as the (often crudely) humorous scenes known as "drolls" issued by leading publishers Robert Sayers and Carrington Bowles, were hand-painted and sold in garish colors.

The mezzotint technique was discovered in the mid-seventeenth century and is unique among graphic methods because the artist starts with a plate which has been previously prepared to print a very deep solid fl, then the ground is reduced to reveal the light tones.
The key to a fine mezzotint lies in the preparation of the plate.
The tool for the preparation of the mezzotint ground is called "rocker." It is a knife with a handle and a thick serrated curved blade.

Yozo Hamaguchi ~ The Modern Mezzotint ~ at Boca Raton Museum of Art | Art Knowledge News   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The mezzotint process, developed in the 17th century, is a copper-plate engraving process that can show tonal shading - "mezzo" or half-tints between fl and white, as well as the subtle gradation of colors.
Through his development of the color mezzotint, Hamaguchi found the perfect balance between the Zen-like simplicity of his subject matter and the laborious complexity of technique in harmonious compositions which reflect an artist’s concern for color, balance, subtlety and refinement, and a poet’s sensitivity to illusory perfection, spiritual meditation and the evocation of mystery.
Because mezzotint was the only medium used, he was considered by many to be the “Master of the Mezzotint.” His achievements in this difficult intaglio process have earned him many awards in Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Lugano, and the Grand Prix from Lubljana International Print Biennale and the Grand Prize from the Northern California Print Competition.

The reason is that the former are made using knurled rollers that produce a fine though shallow burr in the metal.
Traditional mezzotint rocking tools, because of their shape, cut more deeply into the metal surface creating a much deeper burr and hence a greater tonal range available to the artist.
Each full sized plate is individually crafted using a specially adapted pole-rocking system which not only maintains constant pressure and angle of the rocker blade to the plate surface, but also controls rocking motion and spacing to give a perfect 'pass'.
