 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Even the F-86 Sabre, introduced in December 1950, was inferior to the MiG-15 in many respects, although superior tactics and pilot training often allowed UN pilots to get the upper hand.
Desperate to get hold of an intact MiG for testing, the United States offered $100,000 and political asylum to any pilot who would defect with their airplane.
Eventually a North Korean pilot, who claimed to be unaware of the proferred reward, landed at Kimpo Air Base in September 1953, allowing the first detailed evaluation of the aircraft.

Sabre vs MiG - Korean War air combat adversaries
Of the 900 aerial victories claimed by USAF pilots during the war, 792 were MiG-15s shot down by Sabres.
The MiG's greater operational ceiling gave it an initial advantage in combat, yet although it had a greater initial acceleration in a dive, the heavier Sabre had the advantage in a sustained dive.
The MiG's zoom climb and tight turning characteristics (except at high speeds) were valuable, but the fighter's good points were counterbalanced by such undesirable features as poor control at high speeds, a low rate of roll and directional instability at high altitudes.

MiG Alley: MiG 15 vs. F86 Sabre
The MiG's wing construction was not as stiff and the MiG suffered badly from wing flexing.
The result of the MiG's poor stall characteristics was that pilots were uneasy about pushing the aircraft to the limit and hence the Sabre pilot had the edge in a turning contest.
As the MiG was fitted with large bore slow firing canons, the MiG pilot had to pull far more lead in a turning fight compared with the Sabre pilot.

 MiG 105-11
Although the MiG 105-11 was designed by the bureau to be adapted directly into a manned orbital spaceplane for launch from a Vostok or Soyuz booster, the decision was taken to use the configuration but develop a larger manned orbital vehicle for launch from the Zenit booster or by other means (see Uragan and Bizan).
The MiG OKB had studied a two stage manned orbital spacecraft in collaboration with the Korolev (overall system integration) and Tupolev (Mach 6 airbreathing first stage) since 1965.
Korolev had been doing some 'back door' work with MiG in competition to Chelomei's R project for some time (Began with 1962 Mikoyan study '50-50': Hypersonic first stage to Mach 5.5; rocket stage with one man), and immediately proposed tests from atop R-7 rockets as early as 1967.

 Mikoyan MiG-15
The MiG- 15 was extensively operated by the communist forces in the Korean War (1950-53), and its first-class performance and firepower came as a nasty surprise to the Western nations until ultimately the MiG- 15 and improved MiG- 15bis were equaled by the North American F-86 Sabre.
From the end of the Second World War the USSR undertook a vast development program for modem jet-powered warplanes, and the first classic fighter to emerge was the swept-wing MiG-15, which flew in December 1947 as the 1-310 with a Rolls-Royce Nene II turbojet.
The Nene was copied in the USSR as the RD-45, and in its improved RD-45F version this was used in the MiG- 15 production fighter, which entered service late in 1948.

 MIKOYAN
These included the MiG-15 (which shocked Western forces in the Korean War with its speed and agility), the MiG-17 (capable of supersonic speeds), the MiG-19 (the first mass-produced Soviet supersonic fighter), and the MiG-21 (known by the NATO codename "Fishbed"), which is quite possibly the most famous of all Soviet fighter planes.
Few MiG interceptors, in fact, saw action during World War II, and it was only in the postwar era that the organization, known by then as the Experimental Design Bureau No. 155 (OKB-155), grew rapidly in size and influence.
The MiG company was founded as an independent design department in December 1939 by Artem Mikoyan, a young aviation designer who had grown up in a remote Asian village.

Edwards Air Force Base - MiG-15
In one vertical power dive, Yeager pushed the MiG-15 beyond the bounds of stability and proved conclusively that the enemy plane was incapable of reaching supersonic speeds.
Yeager flew the high-Mach and high-altitude work on the expatriate MiG, and the firing tests of its heavy cannon.
At the end of the tests, according to Boyd, the Air Force knew more about the MiG’s capability than the Soviets did.

 Aircraft Hangar - MIG-15
Although several MiG-15s were brought down by B-29 gunners and other U.N. aircraft, only the North American F-86 Sabre was the MiG-15's equal in combat.
B-29 losses to the MiGs reached such high levels that the United States Air Force stopped daylight B-29 bombing raids and flew all strikes under the cover of darkness.
The MiG's combat success and its dependability made the plane very popular with Eastern Bloc and Communist nations around the world.

 MIKOYAN MIG-15
Some authorities believe that as many as 18,000 MIG -15s were manufactured, making the plane the most widely produced jet fighter in the World during the early 1950s.
The Russians swiftly began producing a close facsimile of the Rolls-Royce engine and soon were able to manufacture the MIG -15 in quantity.
Apparently Brown was either very skillful or very lucky, for he flew a Lockheed F- 80 Shooting Star, and the F-80 was no match for the MIG -15 jet fighter.

 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 - USSR
Ejection of a MiG Pilot -- This unusual sequence of photos, taken by gun camera film of a U.S. Air Force F-86 "Sabre" jet fighter-interceptor, shows a Communist MIG-15 pilot abandoning his aircraft after it has been hit by the "Sabres" gunfire.
And this was done with the slightly inferior F-86 which had neither the speed, maneuverability nor the altitude of the MiG.
The first step toward producing the first MiG jet was known as the model I-250.

Russian pilots and their MiG's were sent to the Korean war, their aircraft stripped of all Russian insignia and wording, the pilots dressed as civilians, guarded by secret police, on the Trans-Siberian railway, to give them time to learn some Korean language.
At the end of the war, the loss ratio was 13 to 1 against the MiG.

Mig 15 Visits Test Pilot School
In some respects the MiG could out-perform the F-86 (it had a maximum ceiling a few thousand feet higher than the North American Aviation-built Sabre), but by the end of the shooting war in 1953, the Sabre had achieved a 10-to-1 kill ratio over the MiG-15.
When Sutton bought his MiG, he did a lot of research on Rowe's career and life story, and invited Rowe to the convention to be a guest speaker - and to get a ride in a MiG-15.
The MiG-15 was so effective against B-29 high-altitude bombers that United Nations forces were forced to stop daylight bombing because of losses to MiGs.

 Mig 15 Construction (2 of 2)
In my mind, to look like a Mig 15 the horizontal stabilizer and elevator couldn't be altered to make construction and linkage attachment easier.
Therefore, the connection of the two elevator halves was one of the first design issues I had when beginning the preliminary planning for the Mig.
Anyway, for being my first attempt at covering a fuselage like the Mig, I think it turned out all right.

Russia (USSR) In Local Wars and Regional Conflicts
By order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated 15 December 1950 (but not published in the press), for their outstanding completion of their combat obligation the Order of Lenin was presented to Major Yu.
Therefore, after 15 September 1951 it was forbidden for them to accompany Korean army units on operations in that country.
Here is where the combat "run" of the Soviet jet MiGs began, which wound up conducting aerial combat with the newest American jet fighter of the time, the F-86 Sabre, which reached the front in 1951.

Russian Aces of the Korean War
During the time that the "Honchos" (the nickname given by the Sabre pilots to excellent MiG pilots) were in Korea, between April 1951 and January 1952, they shot down or damaged beyond repair 158 UN aircraft against 68 losses, an overall 2:1 kill ratio.
The MiG passed so close to Hinton's Sabre, that he wondered how they avoided a mid-air collision (the MiG driver missed Hinton's aircraft by less than 15 yards).
Their most successful month was October 1951, when the Soviet MiG-15s bagged 8 F-86s, 6 F-84Es, 2 RF-80As and one F-80C, one Meteor and 10 B-29As -25 victories- and suffered only 8 MiGs lost, achieving a 3:1 kill-to-losses ratio.

 MIKOYAN MIG-15
First tested in 1947 and put into production the following year, the MIG -15- named for its Soviet designers, Mikoyan and Guryevich -- was probably the finest jet fighter flying at the time.
On November 8, 1950, nearly five months after the outbreak of Korean War, U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Russell Brown shot down a Soviet built MIG-15 over South Korea in what is believed to have been the first all-jet aerial dogfight in history.
Apparently Brown was either very skillful or very lucky, for he flew a Lockheed F- 80 Shooting Star, and the F-80 was no match for the MIG -15 jet fighter.

The B-29 in MiG Alley by Bud (Frank) Farrell
The value of a B-29, and its 11 or 12 man crew, was far greater than the possible reward of a single MiG-15 with a relatively inexperienced North Korean or Chinese Pilot.
The MiG drops its landing gear to slow down, is flying superb formation with us at our left wing tip and now HE is giving US the finger!

The U.S. then offered to return the MiG to its rightful owners but when no country claimed the plane, it was transferred to the USAF Museum in 1957.
The airplane was next disassembled and airlifted to Wright-Patterson AFB in Dec. 1953 where it was reassembled and given exhaustive flight-testing.
At his request, No came to the States, changed his name, and became a U.S. citizen.

Model Airplane News: Reviews - BOB VIOLETT MODELS MIG-15
The MiG’s laser-cut wooden parts are a refreshing change from the die-crunched parts I’ve seen in some lesser examples, and the parts all fit precisely as shown on the magnificent set of CAD-drawn plans.
If you want to fly the MiG on a turbine, the safest fuel tanks are of molded Kevlar (which will remain intact in the event of a mishap).

MiG-17 FRESCO - Russia / Soviet Nuclear Forces
In 1949, the Mikoyan-Gurevich (MiG) design bureau began work on a new fighter to replace the MiG-15.
Two features of the aircraft were a thinner wing of greater sweep and a redesigned tail that improved stability and handling at speeds approaching Mach 1 (speed of sound).

National Aviation Museum unveils MiG-15 fighter
In any case, the MiG-15 became the first Soviet aircraft with swept wings to enter service.
The coup reference involves not only the 10-year-plus search itself, but also the end result — a MiG that is in immaculate condition and one that was acquired in a mutually beneficial "exchange".
But the MiG is smaller and lighter." It's something visitors to the museum can now see for themselves.

 A 1954 Chinese cover features a MiG-15
There is no question that the MiG pilots were outclassed: Only 78 Sabres were lost in dogfights reminiscent those of the Second World War.
I was thrilled by the black-and-white scenes of aerial combat between North Korean MiGs and U.S. Air Force F-86 Sabres.
By war's end, American F-86 Sabre pilots had claimed 792 victories over MiGs, most of which were flown by Chinese or "volunteer" Russia pilots.
