  MikTeX installation
One of the advantages of MiKTeX is that the addition of LaTeX packages is relatively transparent (vis à vis other LaTeX installations).
Most packages can be added using the MiKTeX Package Manager, included in the MiKTeX installation, by selecting the package from a list and adding it.
These tools are indispensable to deal with PS files if you use MiKTeX, but are also handy to view PS files or to determine the bounding box of an EPS graphic when trying to define it in a LaTeX document.

Version 2 of MiKTeX is slated for release in July, and I'll present a new, thoroughly researched HOW-TO then.
In the meantime, those who want to use MiKTeX with SWP should still find a lot of useful information in this article, and combined with information from the MiKTeX Project Page, things shouldn't be too hard.
MikTeX on the other hand, happily does whatever I ask it to.

The MikTeX folder must be mentioned in the path environmental variable, otherwise you have to type "[MikTeX path]\latex [filename].tex".
I would advise, after installing MiKTeX, that you look for WinShell, which is a text editor specially designed for LaTeX, where everything will just be clicking on buttons if you want to "compile" your.tex file.
I used MikTeX's installation program, and the files were installed in C:\texmf and the path for the executables was automatically added to the path environmental variable.

MiKTeX 2.1 (and later) maintains a database of packages it “knows about”, together with (coded) installation instructions that enable it to install the packages with minimal user intervention.
If MiKTeX knows about your package, it will open up the tree to show you a tick box for your package: check that box.
If MiKTeX doesn’t know about the package you’re interested in, you have to use the long-winded procedure outlined elsewhere in this FAQ.
