MiRNA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In genetics, a miRNA (micro-RNA) is a form of single-stranded RNA which is typically 20-25 nucleotides long, and is thought to regulate the expression of other genes.
The function of miRNAs appears to be in gene regulation.
Mice that were engineered to produce a surplus of types of miRNA found in lymphoma cells developed the disease within 50 days and died two weeks later.

 MiRNA
When this DNA sequence is transcribed into a single-stranded RNA molecule, the miRNA sequence and its reverse-complement base pair to form a double stranded RNA segment; overall this RNA structure is called a hairpin structure.
The annealing of the miRNA to the mRNA results in a double-stranded RNA, which is not transcribed into protein.
In either case, the miRNA prevents the protein biosynthesis of a specific gene, namely the one to whose mRNA it is complementary.

The expression pattern for each miRNA is categorized as either “specific” to either of the two organs (H - heart, B - brain) or “enriched” in either of the two organs.
Positive M values indicate greater miRNA expression in the heart compared to the brain, and negative M values indicate greater miRNA expression in the brain than the heart.

MiRNA fingerprint identified in platelet formation
Scientists have identified a handful of microRNAs (miRNAs) that appear to play a significant role in the development of platelets — blood cells critical to the body's ability to form clots following an injury.
In the current study, Croce, who is also a member of the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center, along with Garzon and colleagues from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, examined miRNA activity in the earliest phases of platelet development.
They discovered that a set of 17 miRNAs are turned off during normal megakaryocyte differentiation and that 8 of those genes create a molecular signature that clearly defines a megakaryocyte from any other type of cell.

 CIS 700
To form a miRNA, a "miRNA gene" is transcribed, a hairpin loop is formed, the Dicer enzyme cuts from one side of the hairpin a small piece of RNA (the miRNA) which is carried by the Argonaut complex to it's target.
Since miRNA's have never been observed independently of Argonaut, it may be that Argonaut attaches to the miRNA even before the miRNA is cut from the hairpin loop.
Since miRNA's require the Argonaut complex to carry them to their targets, one idea would be to create desired miRNA's which are similar to known miRNA's so that Argonaut would still carry them to their targets.
