Miami Gardens was incorporated as a city almost three years ago, but the United States Postal Service would not recognize Miami Gardens as an acceptable postal address for mail sent to city businesses and residences.
According to the postal service, the problem was that the city of Miami Gardens includes five main ZIP codes, serviced by three different postmasters in Miami, Opa-Locka, and Hialeah, but until the new designation, the only ZIP codes allowed to use Miami Gardens -- 33015 and 33017 -- were outside city limits.
As well, about 10 percent of the Hialeah ZIP code 33014 is actually in Miami Gardens, but the postal service had refused to allow residents in the ZIP code to use the city's name in their addresses.
