The Miami Tornado was the tornado event that occurred on May 12, 1997.
The tornado was at the high end of the F1 category on the Fujita scale, with winds of about 100 mph.
While hurricanes are often seen as the biggest weather threat to Miami, tornadoes are relatively common in South Florida, although the vast majority of the tornadoes that strike Miami-Dade County are small, relatively weak F0 or F1 tornadoes.

As for the strongest tornado, this is one of the tornadoes that hit the suburbs of Oklahoma City on May 3, 1999.
Tornado researcher Joshua Wurman of the University of Oklahoma, using a Doppler radar mounted on a truck, measured a wind of 318 mph in the tornado as it was passing over Moore, Okla. Ordinary wind instruments blow away or are broken long before winds reach these kinds of speeds.
The eastern tornado was rated an F-4 and the western one probably reached F-5 strength on the Fujita scale at least briefly.

This is a very rare occurrence for Downtown Miami-- for whatever reason, tornadoes tend to avoid large objects, such as buildings, because there is something about such objects that may interfere with the formation of the tornado.
This tornado was unusual, in that it stayed on the ground for a lengthy time-- three minutes, before it dissipated.
But the area is still not out of danger yet-- the area is still under a general tornado watch, because the conditions are still very ripe for the formation of further storms.

EXCELLENT pic of that funnel cloud though, A-W-E-S-O-M-E. By the way Pittsburgh had a SEVERE tornado for the first time in 200 years a few years ago, and where did it strike, right downtown and on the Mt. Washington vistas.
It was the last tornado to kill more than 100 people in the United States.
Ironically, on the 50th anniversary of that tornado, several tornadoes formed in the Flint area, one of which passed dangerously close to my house.

We have written before that spot-news photographs are often acceptable to editors even though they aren't technically perfect - that is, not perfect in focus, exposure, lighting, etc. - provided they capture a reasonably clear image of the event.
What makes Art's picture of this tornado so special is that it not only captures the event, but also is technically excellent.
