  MIAMI VICE
I shutter to think of what a carbon copy MIAMI VICE film could have been like (lesser film makers could have made it a ghastly, satiric farce that set itself in the 80’s and lampooned the original, as they did with STARSKY AND HUTCH, not that there was anything wrong with the later film).
The story of MIAMI VICE would be sparse enough to fill any episode of the TV show, but the real star of the film is undeniably the man behind the camera.
The film is a dazzler, to be sure (it’s bold, flamboyant, sexy, stylish, and filled to the rim with nail biting action, especially at the beginning and end), but this is more aptly an avant garde, art house summer action film.

 Miami Vice
Miami Vice was less about the solving of mysteries then it was a contemporary morality play.
As Film Comment critic Richard T. Jameson commented, "It's hard to forbear saying, every five minutes or so, 'I can't believe this was shot for television!'" Miami Vice was one of the most visually stylized programs of the 1980s and it drew its stylistic inspiration from the cinema's film noir.
Miami Vice (along with Hill Street Blues and Cagney and Lacey) was one of the ground breaking police programs of the 1980s.

Miami Vice (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Miami Vice is a 2006 American feature film adaptation of the 1980s TV series of the same name, written, produced, and directed by Michael Mann, the TV show's executive producer.
Miami Vice holds a 46-percent rotten rating at Rotten Tomatoes (although, notably, 68% among the "Cream of the Crop" critics) and a 6.2-rating at IMDB with 14,234 votes.
The film had a drop-off of 60.2% the second weekend, dropping off at least 50% in subsequent weekends due to the unusually limited number of original screen releases.

Miami Vice   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Miami Vice is beautifully shot but the lead characters lack the charisma of their TV series counterparts, and the underdeveloped story is well below the standards of Michael Mann's better films.
Miami Vice exudes the kind of gritty life we expect, so much so that you might argue that neither Crockett nor Tubbs deserves to be called a main character; Mann reserves that role for crime itself.
Miami Vice, as entertaining as some of it is, is so cool that it's almost too cool.

Miami Vice Film Review - Time Out Film
For many years, Michael Mann was better known as the name on the brash credits of TV’s ‘Miami Vice’ cop series than as the director of four barely released but for the most part exceptionally fine features; only with ‘The Last of the Mohicans’ and ‘Heat’ did he finally reach the cinemagoing public he deserved.
First encountered on a club stakeout, Crockett and Tubbs – members of a Miami-Dade County PD vice squad that includes, memorably, a woman who’s an expert sharpshooter – are distracted from their immediate task when a suicidal phone call from an informer alerts them to an FBI investigation into the drug trade.
Despite the hype being generated from certain corners, its a safe bet to say that true fans of Miami Vice (that is, those of us that can still remember the 80's TV series!) will be sadly disappointed at Michael Mann’s latest creation on celluloid.

In fact, someone appears to have switched off the sun, which may be why it’s hard to spot a pet crocodile, or a bikini babe or a flamingo, all recurring characters on the original ‘80s TV series Miami Vice, and nowhere to be seen in the movie version.
The release of Miami Vice, the film, brings fans full circle: the series was a minor revolution because it was so unusually cinematic, with its self-serious, intricate underworld plot lines and best-selling soundtracks.
The new Miami Vice, updated to the present but with time-travel cameos from blazers and stubble, is strangely quiet.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Miami Vice   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Miami Vice was boldly cinematic and splashy, awash in vibrant pastel colors, and every week viewers could plug into the fantasy of dashing rogue crime fighters in beautiful locales, with beautiful and sexy women and doomed romances, and a nihilistic mean streak where conflicts were resolved through a clip full of bullets.
Miami Vice finds some heat in the sexual encounters, but not much affection, and it's difficult to empathize with this Crockett or this Tubbs.
But then again, Miami Vice is a pretty lightweight movie with a threadbare premise and, in a way, it's nice to see Mann attacking a movie that is unpretentious pulp.

Miami Vice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Miami Vice was a popular television series (five seasons on NBC from 1984-1989) starring Don Johnson (James "Sonny" Crockett) and Philip Michael Thomas (Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs) as two Miami police detectives working undercover.
Again, one of the most famous scenes that differentiated Miami Vice from other 'conventional' cops shows was the aforementioned scene involving Crockett and Tubbs travelling through the streets of Miami at night in the Ferrari to the song "In the Air Tonight".
The model used in Miami Vice was customized with a chromed slide so that it showed up better during night shots, and was actually a model chambered in.45 ACP and rigged to shoot.45 blanks, despite the show referring to it as being a 10mm Auto.

Game Daze: 'Miami Vice: The Game'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
"Miami Vice: The Game" (Sierra Entertainment; PSP; $39.99; rated M) drips with action, attitude and atmosphere, creating the sensation that you're one of Miami's hippest detectives as you slink through South Beach or pursue drug dealers in wild boat chases in Biscayne Bay.
A spinoff from the summer film starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, this "Vice" draws from the same well of source material but doesn't require you to have seen the movie first to figure out how to proceed.
At heart, "Vice" is a shooter that unfolds as Crockett or Tubbs go undercover on missions to locate drugs, set up increasingly complicated and time-sensitive deals and eventually take down a vicious South American drug kingpin.

There's plenty of death in Miami Vice as well, predictably so, with double-crosses galore and a token appearance by the Russian mob and the Aryan Brotherhood, two criminal enterprises not known for their sartorial splashiness.
Miami Vice's one saving grace, and it's a slim one indeed, comes from Mann's tried-and-true, ultra-choreographed ballistics ballets, including one deafening, third-act rain of cordite and lead that threatens to make you leave the theatre limping.
Perhaps vice isn't what it used to be, or maybe Crockett and Tubbs just aren't all that interesting when removed from their appropriate time slot, but this may well be the dreariest and most monochromatic time you'll have at the movies all summer.

 FOXNews.com - 'Miami Vice' Disappoints - Movies | Reviews
The good thing about "Miami Vice" is that while neither Foxx as Detective Rico Tubbs nor Colin Farrell as Detective Sonny Crocket has much to do concerning dialogue or too much heavy lifting in the area of acting, they are both thoroughly watchable in the film.
His previous film, "Collateral," starring Foxx and Tom Cruise, was nominated for two Academy Awards, and no one can forget that it was Mann who brought the evil Hannibal Lecter to the big screen with the 1986 film "Manhunter," starring "CSI" star William Petersen.
But with "Miami Vice," it appears Mann is too close to his iconic subjects, and the movie is a classic case of letting the wrong scenes play out too long and cutting the wrong scenes for time.

In Full: You'd be forgiven for thinking that a film based on a hugely popular television series directed by the Mann who launched his career with that series would be something to savour; a reinvention that understood both the original and the climate of 2006.
Mann is still a masterfully visual director, projecting a vision of Miami that's uniquely his and, at the same time, wonderfully perceptive, just as he did with the LA of 2004's Collateral.
Not the film we were promised but no shame either, Miami Vice is loaded with just enough thrills and spills to keep us glued to our seats.

Like the film itself, the soundtrack to Miami Vice is no 1980s retro-ride.
As for those who still associate Miami Vice with pastel colors and the 1980s, they're better off checking out the soundtrack to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City--a video game that's actually more faithful to the spirit of the TV series than the movie that bears its name.
Most of this soundtrack is electronic music, with the two Mogwai tracks and Nonpoint's cover of Phil Collin's "in the air tonight." There is also 4 tracks from the "original score" at the end.

GameDaily BIZ: Film Review: Miami Vice
Substance places a distant second to style in the big-screen version of "Miami Vice," which sees respected filmmaker Michael Mann returning to the scene of the crime series that so effectively defined a decade.
In its place is a darker, grittier creature that, while benefiting considerably from Dion Beebe's HD cinematography, is a frustratingly inert affair -- a long and talky excursion that fails to engage the viewer from the outset.
Maybe it had something to do with that Miami heat, but the languid results likely won't be much of a tonic for the summer's lackluster boxoffice -- pirate pictures excepted.
