Notices, such as this one for a boat that operated on the Ohio and Erie Canal, were common on the Miami and Erie Canal.
Many canal boats were built, but as the railroads came into more and more use it became possible to obtain a canal boat, especially one needing repair, for little money.
The canal had been very important in the development of Middletown but by 1900 there was little need, except for water power, for the canal.

The Miami-Erie Canal Corridor Authority (MECCA), headquartered in St. Mary's is a local group that is working to preserve the traces of the Miami and Erie Canal in the area.
The 40-mile Miami and Erie Canal Trail was the first state recreational trail be be designated under the Ohio Trails Act, and is administered by the Ohio DNR, Division of Parks and Recreation.

This hand-dug canal had long since overgrown with vegetation and trees, but race organizers had worked hard to clear the 6-mile stretch that would be used during the race.
While the canal was primarily cleared by organizers there were still several locations when careful paddle placement and observant water reading helped to navigate downed trees and submerged obstructions.
The canal can be paddled thoughout the year, and the additional high water helped, but I don't want to give people the impression that the canal is "always" paddlable.

The Ohio and Erie Canal was constructed in the early 1800s and connected the Ohio River at Portsmouth and Lake Erie at Cleveland, Ohio.
As a result, the canal was divided into two sections, the Ohio and Erie Canal from Cleveland to Portsmouth which crossed the Licking Divide and followed the Scioto River Valley, and the Miami and Erie Canal which connected Cincinnati to Dayton.

 Great Miami River Recreation Trail - Section 1
The first section of the trail opened June 2003 on a 1.6 mile section that follows the old Miami and Erie Canal (Brochure) that was built from Toledo to Cincinnati during 1825-1840.
There is a railroad line West of the trail and the area between the old canal and the railroad bed was full of wildflowers when we walked the trail.
The canal is on the West side of the trail.

For the canal enthusiast, the path south from here is probably the more interesting part of this walk, with many old structures, interesting hydrology and more sylvan walking than to the north.
Again, the trail departs the towpath to follow a paralleling street through the village (Canal Street, again), past several foot bridges over the watered canal, and past the remains of a canal lock with a historical marker, and rejoins the towpath at Wiltshire Rd., on the south end of the village.
From this vicinity, the canal is used as a canoe route to a feeder canal south of St. Mary's, and on to Grand Lake.

Nick Van Schoyck, director of the St. Marys Chamber of Commerce, who also is a member of the Miami and Erie Canal Corridor Association (MECCA), talked with members of the Lake Development Corporation (LDC) during the LDC meeting on Monday.

 Tipp Ciy Trail
It is called "Canal Lock" park because there is a dry lock from old Miami and Erie Canal at the West end of the park.
As can be seen from this photo the trail is adjacent to the Miami Conservancy District levee that protects the city from the Miami River to the right of this photo.
There is a plaque in the park that tells that the Miami and Erie Canal ran through the area.

The Miami and Erie Canal, traversing 249 miles from Cincinnati to Toledo, was begun on July 25, 1825 near Middletown.
Structures on the canal included 19 aqueducts, three guard locks, 103 lift locks, three major reservoirs, and “Deep Cut” that was 6,600 feet long and 52-feet deep.
The peak year for the Miami and Erie Canal was 1851, with revenues of $351,897 and approximately 400 boats in operation.
