 UTU: News
MIAMI, Fla. -- A showdown is looming over the future uses of the half-cent sales tax for transit in Miami-Dade County, according to this report by Larry Lebowitz published by the Miami Herald.
Miami-Dade Transit and key county staffers originally budgeted $163.6 million for the Special Transportation Services (STS) program, so commissioners would have to take $55.4 million from the sales tax voters approved in November 2002 to fill the STS shortfall through 2010.
Like transit critic Del Vecchio, Wilde fears that too many non-rail programs like STS that are draining funds at the front end of the People's Transportation Plan will mean that the money won't be available for all of the big-ticket rail projects promised voters.

A very large fraction of all high-school students in Miami appear to be convinced that the public transportation services currently offered by the Miami-Dade Transit Authority are not sufficient to meet their needs.
However, in the cases of San Antonio and Miami, a new or expanded rapid-transit system must compete with the theoretical speed limit of 70 mph even though in practice this is seldom achievable during rush hours when people need to make such trips.

BUSRide Magazine - News - 9/2/2005 - Miami-Dade transit officials prepare for fuel shortages in wake of Katrina
Larry Lebowitz of the Miami Herald reports with diesel supplies suddenly in doubt, Miami-Dade Transit has begun planning for a worst-case scenario: cutting back on bus service at a time when more people might be looking to abandon their cars for mass transit; though no service changes are imminent.
Transit sources familiar with the contingency plans said most scenarios would include reducing the frequency of buses during midday, nonpeak and weekend routes.
The contingency plans are being developed because of the recent disruption in deliveries that are being felt throughout the southeastern U.S. The transit agency burns about 38,550 gallons of high-grade diesel fuel on the average weekday; 24,200 gallons on most Saturdays; and 21,500 gallons on Sundays.

 Topology & History of Routes - Miami-Dade Public-Transit Project
For this reason, any expanded public-transit system for the Metropolitan Area of Miami must be based upon the existing topologies and patterns of transportation, living, and working that have evolved in the life of the Metropolitan Area of Miami itself.
When we place 100% reliance upon POVs for transit services, the inevitable result is a decline and decay in the traditional "downtown" or core area of a large city.
This again increases the demand for fast, efficient, and comfortable passenger transit between these airports and all metropolitan areas, including the downtown area in particular -- but often servicing different airport locations as a result of these relocations -- such as in Paris and Munich is examples.
