 Warwick’s Villages and Historic Places
On January 12, 1642/43, Gorton and eleven of his followers signed a deed known as the Shawomet Purchase with Miantonomi, the "chief sachem of the Narragansetts." This deed was witnessed by Pomham, sachem of Shawomet and a number of other Native Americans.
Believing that Gorton was a friend of Miantonomi and had great influence in the English Court, the Narragansett tribe, upon Gorton’s suggestion, placed itself under "the government and protection of that honorable State of Old England," and made Gorton, Wicks, Holden and Warner their agents to report their submission to the King.
Narragansett sachem, Miantonomi, was put to death while Gorton and his followers were imprisoned in Massachusetts.

Joseph C. Dennis was appointed as first librarian at the Miantonomi Library and Aretas A. Saunders, who was a teacher at Oliphant School was appointed Assistant Librarian.

Lion Gardener, author of this 1660 narrative, was an English military engineer who came to Connecticut in 1635 to oversee the construction of the fort and town of Saybrook.
In the early 1840s, Miantonomi, the sachem of the Narragansetts, a rival of the Montauketts, came to Long Island to create an alliance with the Montauketts and other local tribes against the English.
Gardener and Wyandanch succeeded in contacting the leaders of nearby Connecticut for help, the plan was stopped, and Miantomi was captured and executed the following year.

 Shawomet Baptist Church, Warwick, RI
The history of the Shawomet Baptist Church is interwoven with that of the City of Warwick, and this community has a history unsurpassed in interest by any of the other settlements in New England.
The first settlement in Warwick, south of the Pawtuxet, purchase made by Roger Williams as part of the original purchase from Canonicus and Miantonomi, was made by John Greene, surgeon, who purchased from the Indians in 1641, a tract of territory of which Spring Green Farm formed a part.
On January 12, 1642, Samuel Gorton and a number of companions obtained a deed from Miantonomi of land south of the John Greene purchase, to the north shore of Cowesett Bay, and extended twenty miles to the westward, and known as the “Shawomet Purchase”.

 Good Dirt from the Aquidneck Land Trust
In 1929, the Miantonomi Memorial Park Commission erected the stone tower on top of Miantonomi Hill to memorialize veterans of World War I. This urban gem has now been secured by an Aquidneck Land Trust Conservation Easement so that it may be enjoyed for generations to come.
The landowner remains the landowner and the conservation organization and/or government agency permanently oversees the restrictions in the Conservation Easement to ensure the property,s conservation values remain protected.
As a result of this conservation transaction, Miantonomi Park has moved up from the Land Conserved with a Deed Restriction level (the park was subject to some general and somewhat vague deed restrictions during the 1921 conveyance from Helen Stokes to the City of Newport) to the Land Conserved with a Perpetual Conservation Restriction level.
