Miaow is one of those curious groups whose mystique and influential sway greatly overshadowed their meager recorded output.
Miaow sounded nothing like any of those groups of course, which was inevitably why they should have been on the same bill of course; parts of the '80s being about risks and eclectic mixing.
Miaow were never mainstream, which isn't to say they were pointedly or consciously 'difficult', just that they were too naturally obtuse and slightly skewed to ever really mix it with whatever it was that clogged up the mainstream charts of the time.

The album’s instrumentation is as layered and varied as ever, moving effortlessly from soft pop-ballads to more witty, folk infused numbers.
However this is an album to own if you're a fan of their style or of great tunes generally.
Heaton would never be as melodramatic as to record a nervous breakdown concept album but with the breezy pop of Worthless Lie ("And when she calls i hope its you that dials") you'd never think it.

I thought this was a very musically innovative album, but lyrically it fell in a Utah pothole (if you've never been to Utah, just imagine a hole in the road that's half a meter across and about 10-12 cm deep ruining your car).
I see this as a non-issue, but I do want to point one thing out: If an album is judged by the singles, then there stands a good chance that Q will not be seen so much as Paul's work.

After the collapse of Factory in November 1992 the relative expense of the project (including photo sessions with Robert Mapplethorpe) was cited as a factor in the label's demise, but in truth the album's high budget was only one of a series is fiscal indiscretions by Factory.
The album appeared on their own Lilypad label (via Chicago-based Heart and Soul), and was described by one reviewer as a blend of Astrud Gilberto and Roxy Music, and by another as a shadowy corner of the adult pop universe.

This album sums this up perfectly, as though they've always used strings and piano's in their music, they do that here, while not falling into the trap they fell in with their follow-up album 'Miaow,' where they maybe overdo it slightly.

In a review of the album, The Drum Media singled out the ‘gloriously angular guitar solos’ and described the variety of the record as being ‘just like an old Beatles album’.

Not too long after, they recorded their first Peel Session, and these songs reveal that Miaow had refined their sound even further; "Did She" and "Following Through" are both rather strong numbers--much better than anything they'd previously done.
By the time they reached their Factory debut, "When It All Comes Down," Miaow really were at the top of their game.

She represents the gloomy element of the album, which always walks a precarious line between the bipolar thoughts associated with happiness and sadness.
One of the songs on the album sounds much like the Magnetic Fields’ song Smoke and Mirrors, now steadily blaring from her headset as she snaps out of her somnambular trance in time to dodge the contently aloof boy.
All this is accomplished without going the route of the emotionally volatile emo bands whose shouts on the airwaves have the tendency to force the individual to overlook the sheer power of passion communicated through a softer medium: the fragilely quiet and disturbingly brooding mind.
