Use of mebibyte and related units is strongly endorsed by IEEE and CIPM.
Mibibyte is a common misspelling, presumably from the "i" in the abbreviation or confusion about how the surrounding prefixes (i.e.
The "i" in MiB is actually from the end of the prefix.

theyre trying to get everything converted to gibibytes, mibibytes and kibibytes to denote true powers of 2.
Most notably, the PDP series of computers had an 18-bit word size, so they had 36-bit long words and 9-bit bytes.
Thus, on a PDP, a base-2 megabyte (mibibyte) has 9437184 bits.

For the record, KiB and MiB are Kibibytes and Mibibytes.
Kibibytes and Mibibytes are measured in proper powers of 2, with a kibibyte being 2^10 bytes and mibibyte being 2^20 bytes.
If you want to call proper megabytes mibibytes, then feel free to do so, but they should really be referred to as megabytes (MB).

The GX is the original cg6, with the TurboGX version being basically the same hardware, just a bit faster.
The both have one mibibyte of memory, and supports resolutions of up to 1152x900.
The SPARCstation LX on-board framebuffer is a regular GX, but with a slot to expand memory to 2 mibibytes, allowing resolution of up to 1600x1280.

Actually it's a little more complex than that: I stored all the numbers in kB in my $mem array (divide by 1024) because the active/inactive/etc details stored later in the file are stored in kilobytes and I wanted all the numbers in $mem to have the same units.
Dividing by 1,048,576 (2^10 which is the number of bytes in a mibibyte) will give you the same numbers that my example shows.
The divide by zero is an error when you divide one number by nothing (X / 0 = ?).

As well as it being easier to work out capacity, this is also done for marketing purposes (you can advertise a product as having a larger capacity, and technically you're not lieing).
The Base 2 definition of 1Mb as 1,024 kilobytes, each made up of 1,024 bytes, is actually known as a "Mibibyte"

Personally I do not really like the new prefixes for binary multiples!
I think mibibyte and gibibyte sounds really retarded when pronouced out loud.
Sure, it’s kinda cool to type MiB or GiB but try to say it out loud without feeling at least a wee bit silly…

OTOH, for infrequent usage, you can just add the qualifier, e.g.
"The hard drive has a capacity of 200 binary GB.", "The bus achieves transfer rates of 500 metric MB per second." Doesn't sound nearly as silly as "mibibyte", does it?
IMHO, storage device advertising should have to list both, equally prominently, so the box should say something like, "Capacity: 200 GB (metric) / 186 GB (binary)".
