It was one of the biggest dams in the world measuring 262 metres (860 ft) high, 27 meters (89 ft) thick at the base and 3.4 meters (11 ft) at the top.
Despite this, the structure of the dam was largely undamaged – the top ((prosody) the accent in a metrical foot of verse) metre or so of (Structure built of stone or brick by a mason) masonry was washed away, but the basic structure remained standing.
The dam remains standing to this day but the (Tank used for collecting and storing a liquid (as water or oil)) reservoir it served is now unusable due to the amount of rubble and mud which was swept into it.

State dam safety staffs are spread thin, and when failures occur, particularly in a wide spread area similar to the many failures that occurred along the east coast as a result of Hurricane Floyd, state engineers have little or no time to gather pertinent information with respect to the breach parameters and resultant damages.
Dam failure warnings were also less likely where the drainage area was small or the reservoir had little or no flood storage space, i.e, when the reservoir was able to quickly fill and overtop the dam.

The Nature and Construction of Dams
A couple of examples of embankment dams are: the High Island Dam in Hong Kong, the Mica Dam in Canada and the Marchlyn Dam in North Wales made of rock, the 154m high Goschener Dam in Switzerland made of broken stone, and the Aswan High Dam in Egypt.
The dam itself is a rockfill barrier encasing a central structure of sand, clay and concrete which is pegged to the bedrock by a huge curtain of epoxy-like grout.
Finally on the surface of the dam 29.6 million cubic yards of rock fill were piled on, to add tremendous mass to the structure and to dissipate potentially damaging erosion by the wind-driven waves of the enormous reservoir.
