The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland has renewed calls for the UK government to come up with a statutory definition of the word "accountant" after an Irish minister indicated he supported such a move.
ICAS welcomed a statement from the trade minister, Michael Ahern, that the Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority had decided there was "merit" in having a statutory definition, after the body considered the matter at his request.
Claiming that the statement meant that legal recognition of the term "accountant" had moved a step closer in Ireland, the institute said such a step would mean that only properly qualified and regulated practitioners could describe themselves as accountants.
